Keefe, McDaniel Named Times’ Players of the Year

Center Adam Keefe of Woodbridge High School and point guard Aimee McDaniel of Brea-Olinda were named Orange County’s boy and girl basketball players of the year Sunday at an awards ceremony sponsored by The Times at the Anaheim Hilton.

Keefe, a 6-foot 9-inch senior, averaged 26.3 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. He scored 2,212 points in his career to finish 11th on the state’s career scoring list. Keefe will attend Stanford University in the fall.

McDaniel, a 5-10 sophomore, averaged 21 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds to help lead Brea-Olinda to a 28-2 record. She became the first county sophomore to win the player of the year award.

John Mayberry of Kennedy and Eric Bangs of Woodbridge were named the boys and girls coach of the year. Mayberry led Kennedy to the Southern Section 3-A division championship and Bangs led Woodbridge to the runnerup spot in 2-A division.

Paul Westhead, Loyola Marymount basketball coach, was guest speaker as 240 players from San Diego to Ventura were presented trophies and certificates.

Dawn Charrion (Marina); Tami Chick (Huntington Beach); Joni Easterly (Katella); Donna Gondringer (La Quinta); Aimee McDaniel (Brea-Olinda); Kathy Millat (Woodbridge); Heather Schoeny (Capistrano Valley); Robin Seabrook (La Habra); Tricia Stringam (Mission Viejo), and Susan Tousey (Brea-Olinda).

The boys honored:

Gylan Dottin (Saddleback); Mike Goff (Magnolia); Steve Guild (Marina); Bobby Joyce (Santa Ana); Adam Keefe (Woodbridge); Brian Kenney (Servite); Leo Parker (Tustin); Kevin Rembert (Mater Dei); Joe Small (Bolsa Grande), and Chris Tower (Westminster).
