Share

Oak Park senior Geoff Knight set two personal bests to highlight Valley-area performances at the Tri-Valley League track preliminaries at Carpinteria High on Tuesday.

Knight, who placed third in the discus at last week’s Ventura County championships, unleashed a throw of 165 feet, 8 inches to lead the discus qualifying. The mark bettered his previous best, set at the county meet, by 19 feet and moved him to third on the Valley-area list behind the Saugus duo of Damiean Jenkins (173-5) and John Characky (167-8).

Knight also led qualifiers in the shotput at 48-10, nearly a foot farther than his previous best.

“He just went nuts,” Oak Park Coach Kevin Smith said. “Especially in the discus. That was an incredible throw.”

Despite his effort, Knight still trails his brother on the all-time Oak Park list. John Knight, who competes for UCLA, holds the school record of 171-6 in the discus.

Knight’s teammate, Dana Neumann, set a personal best in the girls’ discus with a qualifying mark of 121-7. Carpinteria’s Michelin Schaeffer threw 137-2 to lead qualifying.
