High School Roundup : Gutierrez’s Grand Slam Lifts Castle Park Past Hilltop

Cesar Gutierrez hit a grand slam as No. 6-ranked Castle Park High School defeated Hilltop, 9-6, in a Metro Conference baseball game Tuesday at Hilltop.

Mike Vallarelli of Castle Park was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and pitcher Sergio Hicks raised his record to 7-0.

For Hilltop (4-11, 3-4), Don Diffenbaugh was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Joe Calabria hit a solo home run in the sixth. Brian Leonhardt (1-6) took the loss. Castle Park is 19-3-1 and 7-1.

In other Metro games:

Sweetwater 6, Bonita Vista 4--Marcos Miranda allowed only four hits in his first start, and host Sweetwater (12-9-1, 6-2) took advantage of six walks by scoring six runs in the fourth. Bonita Vista is 14-7 and 5-3.

Chula Vista 3, Montgomery 2--Shawn Miranda hit a two-out, two-run double, and Steve Trainor allowed only four hits for visiting Chula Vista (9-11 and 6-2). Montgomery is 11-6 and 5-3.

Coronado 10, Marian 5--Bill Pate was 1 for 3, but his hit was a three-run home run in the first for Coronado (14-6, 5-3). David Powers was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI for Marian (3-17, 1-7).

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Hoover 10, Christian 2--Gus Garcia drove in three runs, and Felipe Preciado hit a solo home run for host Hoover (16-7, 9-2). Hoover’s Tyrone Upton also had two RBIs, and Ken Feistel scattered eight hits. Christian 2-16 and 2-9.

Crawford 14, Lincoln 3--Manny Gagliano hit two home runs and Keith Gilbert was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Crawford (13-7, 8-2). Gilbert (1-0) was also the winning pitcher. Freddie Stokes (1-5) took the loss, and Monte Smith was 3 for 3 for Lincoln (3-16, 2-9).

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Pt. Loma 8, Serra 5--Marcel Brown drove in three runs with two hits, and Jamie Anglin scattered nine hits. Pt. Loma is 8-11-1 and 3-7. Serra is 7-14-0 and 3-8-0.

Patrick Henry 10, Morse 5--Corey Powell hit a three-run homer, and Lance Lowry had a double and a triple for visiting Patrick Henry (11-9, 6-5). Morse is 10-11 and 4-6.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

La Jolla 11, Kearny 6--No. 8 La Jolla (16-5, 8-2) fared well on the road behind Brent Woodall’s six hitter and two-run homer runs by Adam Lenain and Jeff Schultz. Woodall struck out 10 batters. Kearny is 8-11-0 and 4-6.

Mission Bay 8, Clairemont 4--Sean Rees, Tony Lennan and Colin Davis each had two RBIs for No. 3 Mission Bay (18-2-1, 8-2). Scott Kuhl (6-0) was the winner. Vic Beltran (4-7) took the loss for visiting Clairemont (6-14, 3-8).

TRACK AND FIELD

San Dieguito senior Matt Lehman cleared 15-4 in the pole vault--second best in the San Diego Section this year--but Orange Glen won the Palomar League dual meet, 103-33.
