MacLean, Klemm Honored by Times

Don MacLean of Simi Valley High capped a distinguished high school career by being named the inaugural Ventura County boys’ Player of the Year at The Times’ awards brunch Sunday.

Mary Klemm of Buena was honored as girls’ player of the year, Glen Hannah of Buena was named boys’ coach of the year and Tom McConville of Santa Clara was named girls’ coach of the year.

MacLean, a 6-foot, 10-inch All-American center, averaged 31.5 points a game in leading Simi Valley to the Southern Section 4-A Division title. MacLean, who will attend UCLA, set a county record by scoring 52 points in one game and had 2,343 career points, fifth on the all-time Southern Section list.

Klemm, a 5-7 All-American point guard, led Buena to a 76-6 record during her three varsity seasons. Klemm, who will attend Arizona, was third in the Southern Section with 10.1 assists a game.

Hannah’s team was expected to finish third in the Channel League but won the title with a 14-0 record. The Bulldogs were 23-3 overall and advanced to the 4-A quarterfinals.

McConville’s team won its seventh Frontier League title in a row and advanced to the Southern California regional final.
