Prep Roundup : Canyon Tennis Team Is a Perfect 20-0

Scott Page and Craig Moore swept their sets at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to help Canyon High School to a 17-1 Century League tennis victory over Villa Park Thursday at Canyon.

The victory capped a 20-0 regular season for Canyon, including a 10-0 league record and the school’s first Century League championship. It also marked the first time in the 14-year history of the school that the tennis team has gone undefeated.

In the Angelus League boys’ track and field finals:

Bishop Amat’s Derek Zdarstek won the long jump (22-feet 9-inches), 400 meters (50.6 seconds), 200 (21.7) and led the Lancers’ 1,600-meter relay team to victory in 3:30.6.

Bishop Amat had another multiple winner in Chris Waight, who won the 1,600 (4:37.8) and the 3,200 (10:08.7). Mater Dei’s George Lynch won the 110 high hurdles (14.3) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.2).

Mater Dei had won the league championship before this meet by virtue of its dual meet record. Bishop Montgomery won the league final sweepstakes trophy with a score of 226. Servite (212) placed second and Mater Dei (195) third.

In the Sunset League track and field finals:

Kaleaph Carter of Edison won the boys’ discus (173-5 1/2), the only final event contested Thursday at Fountain Valley. Brad Grace of Huntington Beach was second with a 165-4 toss.

The remainder of the finals will be held today at Huntington Beach.

In Sunset League boys’ swimming preliminaries:

Jason Cox, Mark Nielson and John Wester each won two events at Golden West College. Cox, a sophomore from Marina, won the 200-meter freestyle (1:46.15) and the 100 backstroke (55.30).

Nielson, a senior from Fountain Valley, won the 50 freestyle (21.83) and the 100 freestyle (48.37). Wester, a junior from Westminster, won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.02) and the 100 butterfly (53.26).

League finals start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Golden West.

In Sunset League golf:

Edison 215, Fountain Valley 225--Frank Pantoja shot a two-over-par 28 to lead Edison in the league finale for both teams at Mile Square Park.

In Sea View League volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Tustin 0--Newport Harbor (11-3, 9-1) won, 15-3, 15-2, 15-1, at home.

In Sunset League Volleyball:

Edison 3, Huntington Beach 2--Visiting Edison rallied to win, 12-15, 12-15, 15-0, 15-0, 15-3.
