Two second-team junior college All-Americans are among seven women basketball players to sign letters of intent to attend San Diego State next season.

Stacie Washington, a 6-foot 3-inch center from Central Arizona College in Collidge, and Stefanie Massie, a 5-11 forward from Howard College in Big Spring, Tex., are among the players announced Wednesday by Coach Earnest Riggins.

Washington averaged 16.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in leading Central Arizona to a fourth-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Assn. tournament. Massie averaged 26.5 points and 10.9 rebounds as a sophomore.

Also signing with SDSU were: Carla Gladden, a 5-6 All-Southern Section selection from Morningside High School in Inglewood; Brenda Hatchett, a 5-0 point guard who averaged 33.2 points for Mitchell High School in Memphis, Tenn.; Crystal Lee, a 5-4 guard who averaged 23.1 points at Valley High School in Sacramento; and Monica Glass a 5-9 junior guard/forward, who is transferring from San Rafael College after two seasons at Dayton.

Riggins also announced that Marcie Heaps, a 6-3 center/forward who averaged 16.0 points at Woods Cross (Utah) High School, signed a letter of intent during the early signing period in November.

“I’m overwhelmed,” Riggins said. “We’ve brought in some outstanding players. The guards we signed do the things we want our guards to do. They have speed, quickness and handle the ball well.”

Riggins also said that two guards have left the team. Alison Smith, a sophomore from Troy, Mo., who started 27 of 31 games and averaged 7 points, will likely transfer to Southern Illinois. Kim Wilson, a reserve from Brighton, Ala., is expected to attend a community college, Riggins said.

TRACK

Ron Brown, former Ram wide receiver, will compete in the 100-meter dash in the Michelob Invitational track meet June 25 at Balboa Stadium, meet officials said.

Brown, who announced his retirement from the Rams last month to renew his track career, finished fourth in the 100 at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and was a member of the gold-medal-winning U.S. 400-meter relay team.
