Southern Section 3-A Baseball Playoffs : Kennedy Gets Gifts, Holds On to Top Artesia, 7-6

Kennedy High School scored three runs without benefit of a hit in the fifth inning and held on to defeat Artesia, 7-6, Tuesday in a Southern Section 3-A wild-card game at Artesia.

Trailing, 6-4, Kennedy loaded the bases with two out on two walks and a hit batter. A pair of wild pitches scored Ernie Franco and Peter Montera to tie the score. Scott Morris then stole home when losing pitcher Tony Adamson made a pickoff attempt to first base.

Kennedy led, 4-0, after two innings but fell behind after Artesia scored six unearned runs. Montera (5-5) went the distance for the victory.

Paul Ruark had two hits and an RBI for Kennedy.

The Irish will play at Laguna Hills in a first-round game Friday.

In the 2-A wild-card game:

El Toro 13, Trabuco Hills 2--Adam Brass had four hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBIs to lead El Toro (14-13) at Trabuco Hills. Freshman Rob Johnson (2-4) pitched six innings, allowing no runs and striking out five. Sean Drinkwater had two hits and two RBIs and Dave Nemeth had two hits and one RBI for El Toro. Brad Collins hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the seventh for Trabuco Hills (12-10).
