Girls’ Athletes of the Week : SOFTBALL

Tisha Ashfield regained her academic eligibility last week and helped Hilltop maintain its lead atop the South Bay League.

On May 10, Ashfield went 2 for 2 in a 3-0 victory over Mar Vista. On Thursday, she replaced pitcher Allison Charles in the third inning with Marian ahead, 1-0. She allowed just 2 hits and struck out 2 over the final 5 innings as Hilltop (10-1, 19-5) rallied for an 8-1 victory. It was Ashfield’s first win this season.

Gigi Yuson of Montgomery won the 100-meter and 220-yard dashes and was third in the triple jump at the Mesa League finals Friday.

Yuson, undefeated in the 100, ran a 12.06 to defeat Bonita Vista’s Debbie Karins by .29 seconds. Yuson won the 220 in 24.24 and jumped 32 feet in the triple jump.

Two 1987 section champions, Kristina Hand of Fallbrook and Lynn Patrick of Serra, both fared well at league championship meets Friday.

Hand won the 800 meters in 2:12, a county best this year, at the Palomar League meet.

Patrick improved her county-best high jump to 5-feet 9-inches at the City Eastern meet. She went 5-10 last year to win the state title.
