Grant 7, Sylmar 2--John Kukawski spoiled the return of Sylmar’s Olonzo Woodfin, hitting a two-run home run off the senior left-hander in the first inning in an East Valley League game at Sylmar.

Kukawski finished with three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs to give Grant a tie for third place with North Hollywood. The Lancers (12-10, 10-8 in league play) earned the league’s third-place playoff berth based on head-to-head competition with North Hollywood.

Kukawski’s second two-run shot came in the seventh and secured the victory. Javier Delahoya (6-2) pitched a 6-hitter, striking out 11.

Woodfin (4-2) struck out three and allowed three hits and three walks in three innings for Sylmar (12-10, 11-7), which enters the playoffs as the league’s second-place entry.

Poly 7, North Hollywood 0--Luis Porres was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and Greg Nealon pitched four hitless innings to lead the Parrots to an East Valley League victory at Poly.

Porres sparked a three-run fourth with a two-run triple for league-champion Poly (19-3, 17-1). In his second start since recovering from mononucleosis, Nealon struck out two and allowed no walks.

Chatsworth 6, Reseda 5--The Chancellors (23-1, 15-0) survived a seventh-inning Reseda rally to complete an undefeated West Valley League season.

Reseda (7-12, 4-11), the league’s last-place team, trailed, 6-1, entering the seventh but scored four runs on five hits and a walk after two were out. A run-scoring single by senior Kevin Ogle and a two-run single by Damon Lantz sparked the comeback.

Joel Wolfe knocked in the winning run with a double in the sixth.

San Fernando 4, Monroe 2--Robert Chavez hit a run-scoring triple in the fifth to drive in the winning run for the Tigers in a Mid-Valley League game at San Fernando that clinched second-place for San Fernando (11-6, 11-4).

Chavez, a senior, was 3 for 3 with two steals, and Rich Ortiz was 2 for 3. Junior Frank Serna (3-1) pitched a complete-game six-hitter.

Granada Hills 20, Van Nuys 0--Charles Fowlks and Sean Brown led the Highlanders’ 18-hit assault against Van Nuys (1-14), the Mid-Valley League’s last-place team. Fowlks was 4 for 4 with six RBIs and Brown was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Granada Hills (15-4, 11-4) tied San Fernando for second place but enters the playoffs as the league’s third-place entry based on head-to-head competition.
