Wood Misses Perfect Game, but Castle Park Wins, 8-0

Dawn Wood (18-6) lost a perfect game in the seventh inning on an infield single, but Castle Park High School (18-9) still defeated Clairemont, 8-0, in a 2-A softball playoff game Saturday.

Jessica Himinez hit a three-run home run in Castle Park’s five-run fourth, and Margaret Mekus was 4 for 4 with five stolen bases and three runs scored. Clairemont finished at 11-7.

In other 2-A softball playoff games:

University of San Diego High School 8, San Diego 1--Julie Eggleton and Ann Casey both went 3 for 4 for USDHS (14-7). San Diego loaded the bases with two out in the fourth, but Kate Thornburgh made a diving catch in center field to stop the rally. Viki Vechinski (9-1) was the winning pitcher. San Diego finished 9-6.

San Marcos 2, Mar Vista 0--Yvette Gurule scored a run in the third inning and singled home another in the fourth for San Marcos (16-8), which plays at Hilltop Tuesday. Mar Vista finished at 13-9.

Briefly--Marian 2, Rancho Buena Vista 0.

Monte Vista 3, Orange Glen 0--Danielle Silva had three hits for Monte Vista (17-5). Orange Glen finished 11-12.

Bishop’s 10, Calipatria 0--Ginger Bial (9-0) pitched a two-hitter and Holly Hanson hit a two-run home run for Bishop’s (18-3). Calipatria finished 9-10.

Mountain Empire 11, Calvin Christian 3--Patsy Pierce, Mary Ortmeier and Lura Poggi all hit home runs during Mountain Empire’s seven-run fourth. Stacie Peckham (15-4) struck out 11 for Mountain Empire (18-4). Calvin Christian finished 10-11.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS

Dave Delaney had 19 kills and Jason Apple added 10 to led top-seeded Poway to a 15-1, 15-9, 12-15, 15-10 victory over University of San Diego High School in a San Diego Section quarterfinal match at Poway Saturday. Poway will meet No. 5-seeded Mt. Carmel in a semifinal match Tuesday night at University City High.

Mt. Carmel defeated El Cajon Valley, 15-1, 15-13, 15-11.

Stace Lougeay had 11 kills, and Brock Halter added 10 as San Dieguito (10-3) defeated La Jolla, 15-6, 15-5, 15-12.
