Former Monte Vista High Standout Sets Junior Decathlon Record

Former Monte Vista High School star Matt Farmer set a junior national record in the decathlon Thursday during the first day of competition at The Athletic Congress’ championships in Tallahassee, Fla.

Farmer, who will be a sophomore at UC Irvine, had 3,836 points after the first five events, breaking the record held by Jim Fatx of Tennessee (3,789). He had personal best marks in every event but the long jump.

His marks: 100 meters (11.46 seconds), long jump (23-feet 6-inches), shotput (35-8 1/2), high jump (6-10), 400 (50.38).

The top two decathletes will advance to the World Junior Championships in Sudbury, Canada, July 25-26.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Tara Cross, a junior from Cal State Long Beach, had 16 kills as the U.S. women’s national B team defeated the West German national team, 18-16, 15-10, 15-11, at Carlsbad High School in front of 650 spectators. After trailing 12-3, 7-2, and 11-6, the United States rallied to win each game.

The West Germans will play the U.S. Olympic team at 7:30 tonight at UC San Diego.

Alicia Turner and Cheri Boyer each had 16 kills and Blair Noonan had 10 as the San Diego Volleyball Club defeated Circus Elite of Chicago, 15-10, 14-16, 15-2, 11-15, 15-7, in the International Volleyball Challenge at South Bend, Ind. San Diego, which is 2-0 in the tournament, plays two matches today. SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads, who have led the Western Soccer Alliance race all season, will play at Seattle tonight and at Portland Saturday. Seattle dealt the Nomads (6-2) their first home loss, a 1-0 overtime decision, on Sunday.
