SportsScope : Brahma Coach Takes Administrative Post

Denis Paul, who coached Diamond Bar High to the CIF Southern Section 5-A Division baseball championship last season, has resigned to accept an administrative position at the school.

Paul, who will become grade-level coordinator, guided Diamond Bar to two Southern Section championships and four league championships in five years. The Brahmas won the 2-A title in 1985.

He has a career coaching record of 198-75, including stints at Walnut and Lynwood high schools. He directed Walnut to the 4-A title in 1982.

Bill Cline, Diamond Bar athletic director, said the search for a new coach has started.

“But it will be a challenge to find someone to replace him,” Cline said.

Cline said the Walnut Valley Unified School District will accept applications for the position through Aug. 8 and expects to name the coach by late August.

Practice for the ninth annual National Football Foundation Hall of Fame All-Star Football Game on July 29 at Arroyo High in El Monte starts Monday at Muir High in Pasadena and Bishop Amat High in La Puente.

The West team, coached by Eagle Rock’s Dennis Shaw, will train at Muir. The East, coached by Bishop Amat’s Mark Paredes, will practice at Amat. The game matches most of the top graduated seniors in the San Gabriel Valley.

Among West players are linebackers Chad Brown and Al Robinson of Muir, defensive back Eric Shipp of South Pasadena, offensive linemen Brian Wright of Pasadena and Frank Imperial of Arroyo, and running backs Jon Lee of Pasadena and Mark Mooney of Temple City.

“I am impressed by our squad’s potential speed and quickness, especially on defense,” Shaw said.

The East is especially strong in its interior with offensive lineman Aron Gideon of Amat and defensive linemen Mike Zorn of Los Altos, Kevin Szalonek of Amat, Denail Sparks of Claremont, and Pete Rodriguez and Steve Matuszewicz of Nogales. Other standouts are defensive back Robert Compton of Wilson and quarterbacks Bill Gallis of Northview and John Strycula of Charter Oak.

“Size gives us control of the line of scrimmage, and with that control we should be able to dictate the tempo of the game,” Paredes said.

Bosco Tech High in Rosemead is searching for coaches in five sports, including varsity track, cross country and volleyball.

William Nuanes, athletic director, said Bosco Tech also needs coaches for junior varsity basketball, soccer and volleyball, sophomore basketball and assistants for varsity basketball and track.
