Sophomore Sparkles for Ocean View

The sophomore quarterback experiment at Ocean View High School is a success . . . for at least one night, anyway.

Randy Karliner, who was on the freshman team last season, rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one to lead Ocean View past Cypress, 19-0, in a nonleague football game in front of about 500 at Huntington Beach High School.

“We were concerned about (Karliner) in his first start under the lights,” Guy Carrozzo, Ocean View coach, said. “But he did a really good job.”

Karliner was most impressive on Ocean View’s final drive of the first half.

Cypress missed a 22-yard field-goal attempt and Ocean View got the ball on its own 20. Ocean View was called for delay of game to push the ball back to the 15, but Karliner, a left-hander, then completed six consecutive passes in 1:01 to lead Ocean View to a touchdown.

The big plays on the drive were a 22-yard pass to Quincy Bennett and a 26-yard pass to Kevin Mullens, both over the middle. The pass to Mullens gave Ocean View a first-down at the Cypress 25. Karliner then completed a seven-yard pass to Greg Szuba. The touchdown came on an 18-yard screen pass to running back Dean Martinez. John Arnold kicked the extra point and Ocean View led, 19-0.

Karliner was 11 of 14 for 132 yards in the first half and finished 17 of 23 for 173 yards and no interceptions. Martinez had 86 yards rushing in 16 carries.

Cypress mounted one threat in the second half.

Cypress took the ball on its own 23 with 11:05 left in the game and put together an 18-play drive that finally stalled at the Ocean View 5. Cypress quarterback Chris Dangaran was 6 of 11 on drive for 61 yards.
