Tonight’s High School Football Games : El Dorado Faces Troy Without Scott Sporrer

El Dorado High School won its season-opener, 28-6, over La Quinta last week but lost its top player in the process.

Scott Sporrer, a senior running back and linebacker, suffered a broken leg while trying to make a tackle in the second half. El Dorado Coach Carl Sweet said he didn’t know how long Sporrer would be sidelined.

Sweet figured Sporrer to be an All-Empire League selection. Last week, he showed a hint of what might have been, rushing for 79 yards in 13 carries before he was injured. Sporrer, who was a team captain for the La Quinta game, scored three on runs of 1, 5 and 8 yards.

It’s a big blow to the Golden Hawks, who will face Troy tonight at 7:30 in a nonleague game at Valencia High.

Troy (1-0 after edging Rancho Alamitos, 7-6) is one of the favorites to win the Freeway League title and has huge offensive and defensive lines.

Wade Hogg, a 6-foot 6-inch, 265-pound tackle, is Troy’s top--not to mention largest--offensive lineman. Troy also has 16 returning starters.

“One of the things that concerns us is their good size on defense,” Sweet said. “They broke some long plays against Rancho Alamitos, but they got called back (on penalties).

“I suspect it will be a close game. Probably it’ll be a defensive-oriented ballgame.”

In order to win, El Dorado will have to cut down on turnovers and penalties. The Golden Hawks had 3 turnovers and 135 yards in penalties last week.

El Dorado built a 21-0 lead over La Quinta in the first half, then seemed to shift into cruise control, Sweet said.

“We need to make sure we come out for the second half,” he said. “We have to improve our offensive execution. We want to make some strides and grow from last week.”

But El Dorado will have to do it without Sporrer.

In other featured games (all 7:30 p.m.):

Oceanside (1-0) vs. Mater Dei (0-1) at Santa Ana Stadium--Oceanside is the third-ranked team in San Diego County and is coming off a 24-7 victory over Vista in its opener. Jerry Garrett, a junior quarterback, is Oceanside’s most versatile and dangerous performer. He ran for a touchdown and kicked a field goal last week. Mater Dei quarterback Danny O’Neil overcame a shaky first half to throw for 158 yards in the Monarchs’ 22-17 loss to top-ranked Fountain Valley.

Tustin (0-1) vs. Los Alamitos (0-0-1) at Gahr--Tustin’s offense was sluggish last week in a 10-0 loss to cross-town rival Foothill. Los Alamitos’ defense gave up one more point in a 28-28 tie with Kennedy than it did in 10 regular-season games last year. Senior fullback Eric Caesar ran for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns in 32 carries in an impressive debut for Los Alamitos.

Westminster (0-1) at Millikan (0-0)--Westminster got off to a good start last week in its opener against Valencia, then faded and was beaten 20-9. Quarterback Bob Elliott was a prime example of the Lions’ collapse. He threw for 131 yards in the first quarter, but he finished with 181 yards on 16-of-41 passing. This is Millikan’s opener. The Rams have a lot of newcomers, but their sophomore team was the Moore League champions in 1987. Center Craig Peterson is one of Millikan’s top veterans.

Other games: Glenn at Buena Park; Paramount vs. Katella at Glover Stadium; Santa Ana Valley vs. Kennedy at Western; University at Mission Viejo.
