UCSD Tops Cal Poly Pomona, Wins Volleyball Invitational

The UC-San Diego women’s volleyball team won the University of La Verne Invitational Saturday night, defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 15-8, 16-14, in the championship game.

The Tritons defeated Chapman College, 15-13, 15-13, in a semifinal match. UCSD went 4-0 in Friday’s second pool play. For the tournament, Diana Klintworth had 68 kills in six matches. Rachel Vetter added 54. UCSD is 13-1.

Carolyn Kaspar had 27 kills as visiting San Diego State defeated Pepperdine, 15-10, 8-15, 15-8, 11-15, 15-8, in a nonconference match. Jackie Mendez added 17 kills, Amy Irvin 14 and Kim Washington 11 for SDSU (8-2). Pepperdine is 0-4.

Point Loma Nazarene finished first in its pool at the Cal State San Bernardino Tournament and entered the semifinals with a 3-0 record. Fresno State then defeated the Crusaders, 15-10, 15-12, and Cal State San Bernardino defeated Point Loma, 15-8, 15-10.

Connie Navarro made the all-tournament team and had 36 kills in five matches. Tracie Daniels had 11 aces.

SOCCER

Peter Stahl and Steve Cokkinis each scored a goal as host Point Loma Nazarene defeated Whittier, 2-0, for its school record fifth consecutive victory. Stahl’s goal came on a corner kick, and Cokkinis’ came on a pass from Abdessamad Yahi.

The U.S. International women defeated Chapman College, 5-1. Sally Wiegand scored the first two goals for USIU to give her 12 points for the year, already a single-season record for the second-year program. Marissa Stansbury also scored twice for USIU.

CROSS COUNTRY

San Diego State’s women’s team finished fourth with 145 points, behind UCLA, UC-Irvine and Arizona State, at the UC-Riverside Invitational. UCLA won the meet with 37 points. U.S. International placed seventh and Point Loma Nazarene finished 12th.

UC-Irvine’s Brigid Stirling covered the 5K course in 17 minutes. The top Point Loma finisher was Eva Lindblad in 57th, with a time of 19:24.

In the men’s division, SDSU finished fifth with 206 points, behind Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, UC-Irvine, UC-Riverside and Arizona State. Cal Poly had 33 points.

Chris Craig of Cal Poly won the men’s 10K race in 24:15. Pt. Loma’s Ronny Andersson was 29th in 25:26.30.
