WHO’S HOT

Anthony Cole helped North Torrance’s football team pick up its first win last Friday. The senior had his fourth interception of the season, caught 6 passes for 140 yards and hauled in the winning 2-point conversion in an 8-7 decision over Rolling Hills.

Carson free safety Howard McCowan tied a school record with four deflected passes in a 17-15 win over Lynwood. The 6-1, 180-pound senior leads the Colts with 52 tackles and five deflections.

Kudos to the San Pedro coaching staff for a last-second trick play that gave the Pirates a 20-14 win over Cleveland. Quarterback Mike Seward threw a bouncing lateral to wideout John Pinel, who surprised the defense with a 37-yard scoring pass to Darrell Dupree.

Coast Christian running back Earl Rhodes rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns in a 46-0 eight-man win over Pacific Christian, giving the junior 40 TDs in 15 games over the last two seasons.

WHO’S NOT

Gardena football Coach Dale Hirayama is worried about his offense, and for good reason. The Mohicans have gone nine straight quarters without scoring and have committed eight turnovers in their last two games, three coming last week in a 12-0 loss to Franklin.

Westchester had the dubious distinction of becoming the first football team to lose to El Camino Real of Woodland Hills in three years. The Conquistadores snapped their 24-game winless streak with a 6-3 victory at Westchester.

Injuries continue to plague South Torrance. Coach Joe Austin intended to rest quarterback Dan Jenkins (strained knee) last week, but he was forced to play the senior in the second half of a 31-14 loss to Bishop Montgomery after backup QB Chris Castillo suffered a sprained ankle.

St. Bernard figured to have it easier this season by leaving the powerful Angelus League, but that may not be the case if the Vikings’ 18-14 defeat to little Mary Star was an indication.
