Warriors, Seahawks to Face Tough Opposition

El Camino College football Coach John Featherstone has a 1-2 record against Fullerton College and he’d like nothing better than a victory against the Hornets in Saturday’s 7 p.m. game at El Camino.

But the No. 2 Warriors (2-0) will have their hands full against sixth-ranked Fullerton, which beat College of the Desert in its season opener and Cerritos College last week.

The Hornet offense is capable of just about anything. Sophomore quarterback Vic Williams completed 16 of 20 passes in last week’s 33-0 trouncing of Cerritos, and freshman tailback Jeff Andrews gained 195 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, Fullerton’s strength is in the secondary. The Hornets have two players returning at safety and two at the corners.

“It’s going to be a real test for us this week,” Featherstone said. “They have one of the top offenses we’ll have to face this year. We’re going to have to keep them off balance to beat them.”

El Camino will suffer from the loss of all-conference center Pat Hunt, who tore his left knee last week during a pregame warm-up.

But if freshman quarterback Frank Dolce is on, the Warriors should be in good shape. Last week he completed 15 of 19 passes for 138 yards.

El Camino’s defense should also cause problems for Fullerton. Last week the Warriors limited Orange Coast College to 116 throwing yards and 45 yards rushing while intercepting four times.

Freshman defensive back Tony Church had two interceptions and 11 tackles.

“They just came off winning a national championship,” said Fullerton Coach Hal Sherbeck, “so they have to be doing something right. I just wish I knew what to expect.”

L.A. Harbor (2-1) will have to be in top form for a win against Bakersfield College at Bakersfield on Saturday.

The Seahawks won their Western State Conference opener against Pierce last week but will have a much tougher time against fifth-ranked Bakersfield.

The Renegades (2-0) defeated Ventura College, 35-8, in their season opener and wiped out Sacramento City College, 55-6, last week.

“We’ve played tough competition,” said Harbor Coach Chris Ferragamo, “so therefore we can tough it out with those guys. I think we have the offense that can play with them.”

Harbor dropped its first two games to the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state, El Camino and Taft. Ferragamo said it helped toughen his team, which should come in handy against Bakersfield because the Renegades have a balanced and consistent offense that includes nine returning starters.

Two Renegade running backs, a receiver and a guard were all-league selections.

Sophomore quarterback Stan Greene is a returning starter who has completed about 50% of his passes this year, four of them for touchdowns. As a senior at Redwood High in Visalia, he led the state in passing.

Defensively, the Renegades have only two returning starters, but they’ve held two teams to only one touchdown.

Ferragamo’s plan is to be more balanced offensively against Bakersfield than his team has been in the last three games.
