SportsScope : NASCAR Winds Up Season Saturday at Ascot Raceway

The NASCAR Racing Series for pro stock cars winds up its season Saturday night at Ascot Raceway. Ron Meyer of Anaheim is clinging to a 20-point lead in standings going into the final event at 8 p.m. Fred Estrada of Riverside trails Meyer, with Marcus Mallett of Gardena in third, 68 points back. A NASCAR win is worth 26 points, a second place is 24 and a third place 22. Meyer is after his third consecutive NASCAR title. In a preliminary event at 6, Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa defends a huge lead in midget car standings. The only local racer listed in the midget standings is P. J. Jones of Rolling Hills, who is ninth. California Racing Assn. spring cars also run Saturday night at 8 at Ascot. Jones is also expected to compete.

After winning the Georgetown Invitational Tournament title last week, the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team entertains St. Mary’s College in a West Coast Athletic Conference game tonight at 7:30 in Gersten Pavilion. In other Loyola action, the men’s soccer team plays host to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 1 p.m., the men’s and women’s cross-country teams are at the Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame this afternoon and the water polo team has a match this afternoon at 3 at UC San Diego.

An Australian football team takes on the football club of Caltech on Thursdayin a demonstration game at Banning High School. The kickoff is at 7 p.m. American football rules will be used. The Australians will be coached by former Raider Coach Tom Flores and Cal State Dominguez Hills author-instructor Dr. John Johnson. The Australians, a collection of all-stars from the 50 American rules teams in that country, will tour Europe following the game. For ticket information call 518-1000 or 835-1751. Ticket prices are $6 at the gate or $5 in advance. Banning students and children under 12 pay $2.50. The Aussies will work out Monday on the soccer field at Dominguez Hills. Public practice begins at 11 a.m.

The Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills hosts the California Sprint Classic tonight at 7:30. Professional and amateur bicycle races will be staged. A Japanese-style motor-paced Keirin race is included. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster or at the Velodrome. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12 and seniors.

The 20th annual Golden West Skating Championships continue through Sunday at the Culver City Ice Arena. Competition from young skaters up to a senior division is scheduled. Past Golden West champions include world champions Rosalind Sumners, Debbie Thomas, Linda Fratianne, Scott Hamilton and Brian Boitano. The competition, which begins Saturday, costs $3 for the afternoon session and $4 for the evening. Children under 18 will be admitted free.
