Ocean View 14, Western 0--Ocean View High School converted 2 fumble recoveries into touchdowns in a nonleague victory at Western.

The Seahawks (3-1) went ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter after Raymond Shaw recovered a fumbled punt return at Western’s 33-yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Randy Karliner scored on a 1-yard run.

After a scoreless second quarter, Ocean View scored again on a 1-yard run by Dean Martinez in the third period. That play was set up when Seahawk John Arnold tackled Pioneer punter Miles Roberson on his 1-yard line after a bad center snap.

Neither team was effective moving the ball. Western (1-3) gained just 109 net yards while Ocean View gained 140 for the game.

Both teams were also hampered by penalties. Ocean View was penalized 10 times for 124 yards and Western 8 for 75.

Ocean View’s Kevin Mullens intercepted 2 passes. His second, midway through the fourth quarter, coupled with a 24-yard return, stopped the Pioneers’ only serious threat of the second half.

Ocean View receiver Greg Szuba led all players with 4 catches for 54 yards.
