THE PREPS : Roundup : Marina Easily Wins League Water Polo Opener

Geof Kagy scored three goals as Marina High School defeated Westminster, 18-4, Wednesday in a Sunset League water polo match at Golden West College.

The Vikings (8-7 overall, 1-0 in league play) led, 3-1, after the first period, then outscored the Lions, 6-2, in the second period to take a 9-3 halftime lead. The victory was Marina’s fifth in a row.

Eleven players scored for the Vikings. Chad Roberts, Chuck Kenyen, Sebastian Jacobs, Fred Medanich and Jason Cox each scored two goals.

Goalie Ethan Hull made four saves for Marina.

In Empire League water polo:

El Dorado 20, Esperanza 7--Kyle Utsumi, Scott Fairchild and Matt McClear scored four goals each to lead El Dorado at Esperanza. Snow Bell scored three goals for the Golden Hawks (4-3, 1-0).

Los Alamitos 11, Cypress 8--Eric Lynch scored three goals to lead host Los Alamitos. Adam Ishaeik and Dustin McDonald each scored two goals for the Griffins (4-7, 1-0).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 10, Brea-Olinda 6--Charlie Amoroso scored four goals to lead Valencia at Brea-Olinda. John Myers had three goals for the Tigers (9-3, 1-0). Ray Schwengel scored five goals for Brea-Olinda (5-8, 0-2).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 18, Costa Mesa 0--Brook Fleming swept her sets without losing a game to lead Laguna Hills (9-2, 3-0) at Costa Mesa.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 15, Rolling Hills 3--Keri Phebus swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Corona del Mar. Phebus, a freshman, is 24-0 on the season and has won 22 of those sets, 6-0.

In Pacific Coast league girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--Stacy Trager had 15 kills as the host Artists won, 15-6, 15-10, 15-1. Laguna Beach is 8-2 and 1-0.
