Southland Roundup : Menlo College Rallies Past Winless Claremont-Mudd

Quarterback Greg Clark hit Billy Ryan with a 29-yard touchdown pass with 3:26 remaining as Menlo College defeated winless Claremont-Mudd, 19-13, in a nonconference game Saturday at Claremont.

Menlo raised its record to 5-2, and Claremont-Mudd fell to 0-6.

La Verne 27, Pomona-Pitzer 6--Mark Brown threw 2 touchdown passes as the Leopards (2-3) beat the Sagehens (1-5) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Pomona.

Cal Poly SLO 40, CS Hayward 6--Senior Rod Riley rushed for 179 yards and 3 touchdown as the Mustangs (4-3) beat the Pioneers (1-7) at San Luis Obispo.


St. Mary’s 27, UC Santa Barbara 24--Greg Pron’s 2nd touchdown run of the game, a 6-yarder with 6:26 to play, lifted the Gaels over the Gauchos at Santa Barbara.

St. Mary’s, a Division II school, improved to 8-0, its best start ever. Division III UC Santa Barbara fell to 4-3.

Santa Clara 31, Cal Lutheran 7--Quarterback John St. Jacques threw 2 touchdown passes to lead the Broncos in a Western Football Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Santa Clara is 5-3 and 2-2, Cal Lutheran is 2-5 and 0-3.


UC Davis 31, CS Northridge 13--Tailback Shola Adeyemo scored 2 touchdowns as the Aggies beat the Matadors in a nonconference game at Northridge. The Aggies are 5-2, the Matadors are 5-3.

Occidental 20, U. San Diego 16--Tomy Werbelow completed 17 of 23 passes for 178 yards and 1 touchdown as the Tigers beat the Toros in a nonconference game at Occidental.

Redlands 38, Whittier 7--Eric Carlson rushed for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Bulldogs (1-3, 3-3) beat the Poets (2-1, 2-4) in an SCIAC game at Redlands.
