High School Volleyball : Agoura Tightens Hold on First With Sweep

In a match featuring the Southern Section 3-A Division’s fifth- and sixth-ranked girls’ volleyball teams, Agoura High swept Calabasas to all but wrap up the Frontier League title Thursday at Calabasas.

With the 15-8, 18-16, 15-8 win, fifth-ranked Agoura (10-2) improved to 8-0 in league play with 2 matches remaining. Calabasas is 6-2 in league play.

“Tonight was the best everyone on our team has played,” Agoura Coach Mike Bird said.

Christy Janssen, Agoura’s junior outside hitter, had 23 kills. Tricia Arledge added 7 kills and 2 blocks to lead the way.

Thousand Oaks d. Camarillo, 15-5, 15-7, 15-6--Junior Amy Chellevold had 5 kills and 6 aces to lead the Lancers in the Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Thousand Oaks, ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section 4-A Division, is 14-1, 10-1 in league play. Junior Betsy Moore added 6 kills and 2 blocks for the Lancers.

Newbury Park d. Westlake, 15-7, 13-15, 15-12, 15-2--Marlo Cormier had a season-high 17 kills to lead the undefeated Panthers in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.

Shannon Mutch had 42 assists and Susan Pasquini added 11 kills for Newbury Park (14-0, 10-0).

La Reina d. St. Bonaventure, 15-9, 15-6, 12-15, 15-11--Heather Freeman had 13 kills and 6 blocks to lead the Regents in a Tri-Valley League match at St. Bonaventure. Carolyn Russo added 12 kills for La Reina, which improved to 12-3, 10-1.

Chatsworth d. Taft, 15-3, 15-5--The Chancellors rolled to their 10th consecutive victory behind the play of Lori Mertes and Danielle Mosher in the Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

Mertes, who placed second in the City Section track and field championships in the high jump as a sophomore, had a team-high 9 kills and Mosher had 22 assists.

Chatsworth is 11-1, 8-0.

Notre Dame d. St. Genevieve, 15-1, 15-4, 15-3--The Knights remained in the playoff hunt by sweeping the Valiants in the San Fernando Valley League match at Notre Dame. Maria Thorpe had 5 kills for Notre Dame (6-6, 4-4).

Louisville d. Alemany, 15-11, 15-11, 15-12--Jenny Calfo had 7 blocks and Marybeth Giordano 12 kills to lead the Royals in a San Fernando Valley League match at Alemany.

Chaminade d. Bell-Jeff, 15-8, 16-14, 13-15, 11-15, 15-9--Kim Kisylia had 22 kills and 10 blocks as Chaminade outlasted Bell-Jeff in the San Fernando Valley League match at Bell-Jeff.

Cleveland d. Kennedy, 15-7, 15-11--Nancy Nicholls had a team-high 7 kills for Cleveland (9-3, 5-3) in the Northwest Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

L.A. Baptist d. Marshall Fundamental 15-1, 15-3, 15-6--Host L.A. Baptist, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 1-A Division poll, remained undefeated (13-0, 8-0) with the Alpha League win.

Maranatha d. Montclair Prep, 15-0, 14-16, 5-15, 15-5, 15-12--Nikki Smith had 23 blocks and 5 kills and Maria Cicione had 12 kills, but the Mounties lost an Alpha League match at Maranatha.
