PREP FOOTBALL : Pacific Coast League : Bonilla Barrels for 187 Yards as Costa Mesa Wins
Running back Manny Bonilla rushed for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Costa Mesa High School to a 29-21 Pacific Coast League victory over Laguna Hills Friday night in front of 1,200 at Newport Harbor High School.
Bonilla ran for 66 yards and a touchdown the first time he touched the ball. He broke loose up the middle, cut left and sprinted untouched into the end zone.
Bonilla’s play overshadowed a fine passing performance by Laguna Hills’ quarterback Mike Helm, who completed 16 of 24 passes for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior halfback Mike Allison caught 10 of Helm’s passes for 140 yards.
The victory was the first for Costa Mesa (3-4, 1-2) in Pacific Coast League play. Laguna Hills is 1-7 overall and 0-7 in league.
Mustang receiver/defensive back Duby Ospina pulled off a rare back-to-back defensive/offensive play combination in the second quarter. First, he intercepted Helm’s pass at the Mustang 20 and returned it to the 42. On the next play, Ospina, playing flanker, caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rich Schone.
