Community College Roundup : Hanlon’s Shot Puts OCC Into Tournament Final

Chip Hanlon scored with 21 seconds left to lift Orange Coast College over Mt. San Jacinto, 57-55, in the semifinal round of the Miles Eaton Tournament Friday at Orange Coast.

With the scored tied at 55, OCC’s LaMont Speed was at the line shooting the front end of a 1-and-1. He missed, and Hanlon got the rebound and made a layup to put OCC ahead.

Mt. San Jacinto (7-1) turned the ball over, and Speed was fouled again with 11 seconds left. He missed another free throw, and Mt. San Jacinto got the rebound. But Byron Weley missed a 3-point attempt as time ran out.

OCC (7-1) advanced to the final tonight at 7:30 against Santa Barbara, which upset Imperial Valley, 66-63, in the other semifinal.

Alan Schlines led OCC with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and had 16 rebounds. The freshman center from Foothill High School is 15 of 19 from the field and has 23 rebounds in the past two games.

In the Antelope Valley tournament:

Golden West 107, Los Angeles Valley 93 (overtime)--Golden West led by 6 points with 7 seconds left in regulation, but Los Angeles Valley made two 3-point shots around a pair of Golden West turnovers to send the game into overtime tied at 88.

In overtime, Golden West outscored Valley, 19-5. Elbert Davis led Golden West (8-1) with 28 points. Golden West plays Santa Monica tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game.

In the Grossmont tournament:

Rancho Santiago 77, Grossmont 64--Tony Smalley, a sophomore forward from Servite High School, scored a season-high 21 points to lead Rancho Santiago (5-3). Gary Hunter added 13 and Chirs Martin 11 for Rancho Santiago, which trailed at the half, 43-32.

In the Cypress women’s tournament:

Cypress 61, Mt. San Antonio 50--Vicky Silva scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Cypress in the consolation round. Becky Wayland added 23 points, 18 rebounds and 7 assists for Cypress, which plays OCC at 2 p.m. today for the consolation championship.

Ohlone plays MiraCosta in the championship game at 4 p.m., and Moorpark plays Ventura for third place at noon.

Orange Coast 70, Grossmont 65--Kim Ellerman scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds and Melayne Green had 18 also for OCC (3-5) in the consolation round.

In the College of the Sequoias women’s tournament:

Fullerton 63, Santa Rosa 48-- Lisa Crosskey scored 23 points and had 5 assists to lead Fullerton to a second-round victory over defending state champion Santa Rosa, which eliminated Fullerton in the state tournament last season.
