THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES : Basketball Roundup : Balance Gives Golden West Victory Over Antelope Valley

Markus Muller-Stach scored 19 points and Dave Yamate added 16 to lead Golden West College to a 97-81 victory over Antelope Valley in the consolation round of the 10th annual Golden West men’s basketball tournament.

Carl Champion and Elbert Davis added 11 each for Golden West (10-2), which lost in the first round Thursday to Oxnard, 67-65.

Golden West (10-2) advances to the consolation championship against Citrus at 4 p.m. today.

Riverside plays Glendale at 6 p.m. in the third-place game and Cerritos plays Oxnard in the final at 8 p.m. Cerritos defeated Riverside, 77-59, and Oxnard defeated Glendale, 79-70, on Friday.

Citrus 66, Cypress 62--Marcel Driver scored 20 points to lead Citrus (4-4) in a consolation-round game. Vince Hizon scored 15 points for Cypress (2-6) and Andre Lamoureux added 13.

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

El Camino 78, Saddleback 66--David Keeter scored 19 points and Kevin Mixon 18 as El Camino (8-2) eliminated Saddleback (4-6) in the consolation round. Saddleback trailed, 38-30, at the half but rallied to cut the lead to, 55-51, with 10 minutes left.

Saddleback then turned the ball over 3 consecutive times leading to 8 points for El Camino, the defending state champions. Vincent Mason scored 23 and Sean Keyes 12 for Saddleback.

In the San Jose tournament:

Orange Coast 77, Foothill 54--Alan Schlines scored 14 to lead five OCC players in double players plays in the consolation round game. Dareck Crane and Derek Johnson scored 13 each, Tyler Koon 11 and LaMont Speed 10 for OCC (9-2), which led, 42-28, at the half.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 85, Chaffey 82--Chris Martin hit both ends of a 1-and-1 situation with 15 seconds remaining to give Rancho Santiago (8-3) its final points at Chaffey. Martin finished with 21 points, Tony Smalley added 18, Gene Altamirano 17 and Craig Rice 14 for the Dons. Anders Anderson led Chaffey (3-5) with 18 points.

Fullerton 111, Cal Baptist JV 52--Darryl Griffin scored 17, Lindsay Pettis and Ralph Tallant 14 each and Darrius Castan 10 for host Fullerton (9-1). All 16 Fullerton players scored.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Golden West 74, Moorpark 65--Claudette Jackson scored 15 points, Kim Wilson 14, Lori Totosz 13 and DeeDee Steigar and Stephaine Swanson 10 each for visiting Golden West (8-3).

Orange Coast 69, Chaffey 33--Kim Ellerman had 18 points and Suzanne Bakos had 11 for host Orange Coast (4-7).

Southwestern 66, Rancho Santiago 58--Vanessa Early scored 19 and had 12 rebounds and Pam Murray had 14 points for host Rancho Santiago (4-8). Guard Cassie Jackson scored 29 points for Southwestern (5-4).
