Prep Roundup : Santa Ana Wins Its Soccer Event With 2-0 Victory

Goalie Gus Plasencia held Saddleback High School without a goal as Santa Ana posted a 2-0 victory to win the championship of its Santa Ana Elks boys’ soccer tournament.

In another Santa Ana tournament game:

Fountain Valley 4, Cerritos 2 (double overtime)--Fountain Valley’s Kyle James scored 2 goals in the second overtime period for the Barons in the third-place game.

At the Orange soccer tournament at Chapman College:

La Habra 1, Orange 0--Mark Carr scored on a 20-yard shot to lift La Habra (4-1-2) over top-seeded Orange (2-3-2) in a semifinal.

Mission Viejo 1, Edison 0--Frank Dotson scored on a header in the second half to lead the Diablos (5-0) in a semifinal. Edison is 3-1-1.

Magnolia 1, Dominguez 0--Roger Crawford scored on a free kick to lift Magnolia (2-2-2) in a consolation semifinal.

At the Irvine soccer tournament:

San Clemente 3, Corona del Mar 2--San Clemente goalkeeper Miguel Dendel stopped a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining to preserve his team’s 3-2 lead in the final at Irvine High School.

At the South Torrance tournament:

Mater Dei 2, Santa Barbara 2--Mater Dei’s junior varsity--playing for the varsity, which was held out for disciplinary reasons--tied Santa Barbara in regulation and won on penalty kicks, 4-3, in second-round action. Mater Dei lost, 3-0, to Estancia in the first round.

In girls’ soccer:

At the Cerritos tournament:

Marina 5, Sonora 0--Debbie Klien scored 2 goals, and Bonnie Berry, Anna Wiederrich and Julie Muche scored 1 each to lead Marina to a first-round victory.

At the Irvine tournament:

Los Alamitos 2, Corona del Mar 0--Griffin captain Leanna Jay scored the first goal and Karen Kologziej added a score a corner kick for Los Alamitos in the final.

Dana Hills 3, San Clemente 1--Megan Fosberg, Amy Kroeger and Heidi Phillips scored for the Dolphins (4-0-2) in the consolation final. Brittany Leonard scored for San Clemente.

In girls’ basketball:

At the Artesia tournament:

Fountain Valley 53, Compton 38--Yvette Ybarra scored 14 points and Stacey Hisaka had 11 points to lead the Barons (3-1) in a second-round game at Artesia High School.

At the Savanna tournament:

Loara 39, San Clemente 30--Senior Heidi Sorour scored 19 points and Tracy Titus collected 11 rebounds to lead Savanna to a first-round victory.

Savanna 48, Irvine 12--Savanna’s Jackie Boxley scored 11 points and the Rebels kept Irvine from scoring a field goal until the third quarter in a first-round game.

At the Santa Ana Valley tournament:

Laguna Beach 39, Inglewood 34--Liz Stal had 32 points to lead the Artists.

La Quinta 76, Orange 53--Amy Jalewalia scored 32 points and had 9 rebounds and 6 steals to lead the Aztecs (4-1) at Santa Ana Valley. Heather Brannan had 15 points and 7 rebounds and Janet Kanno had 13 points and 6 steals to help La Quinta.

Rancho Alamitos 59, Torrance 27--Jenny Newsome had 18 points to lead Rancho Alamitos.

Santiago 40, Corona del Mar 34--Three players scored 12 points each to lead Santiago.

Capistrano Valley Christian 37, El Modena 29--Carrie Shannon scored 18 points as the Eagles improved to 2-0 with a first-round victory. The Eagles play Sunny Hills in the second round on Thursday.

Sunny Hills 36, Bolsa Grande 34--Natalie Lessey scored all 6 of her team’s points in the fourth quarter and had 12 in the game to lead Sunny Hills to a first-round victory.

At the Ceres tournament:

Marina 61, Ceres 39--Lisa Orosco (25 points) and Allison Krause (10 points, 9 assists) led Marina (5-0) to the championship game at Ceres, outside of Modesto.

At the San Bernardino tournament:

El Toro 50, Cajon 42--Sara Bone scored 19 points and collected 9 rebounds to lead El Toro (5-0) to the championship.

In nonleague action:

Liberty Christian 55, Leffingwell Christian 29--Sharon Crouch had 28 points, 18 rebounds, 10 steals and 4 assists to lead Liberty Christian (3-2) at home.
