Garcia, Nyberg Are Named Top Players in the Section

Rancho Buena Vista’s Scott Garcia, the state’s leading rusher, and Orange Glen’s Jake Nyberg, who led the San Diego Section in passes caught and reception yardage, were honored Sunday at The Times’ awards ceremony at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers.

Garcia was named The Times’ Back of the Year and Nyberg was selected Lineman of the Year.

Craig Bell, who led Rancho Buena Vista to the section 2-A championship in the school’s second year of existence, was named Coach of the Year.

Garcia led the state in rushing with 2,520 yards and scored 36 touchdowns. Both his rushing and touchdown totals were San Diego Section records.

Nyberg, who had 12 receptions for 206 yards in Orange Glen’s 31-28 loss in the 3-A championship game Saturday night, had 73 receptions for 1,211 yards in the regular season.

Both Nyberg’s totals were third highest in San Diego history, according to the section record book, which goes back to 1960.
