CSUN Needs 2 Basketball Wins to Match Best Start in 6 Years

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team, winner of 5 of its first 6 games, can equal its best start since 1983 with a pair of nonconference wins in the Bay Area this weekend.
The Matadors meet Cal State Hayward (2-5) tonight, then play San Francisco State (2-5) on Saturday. San Francisco State’s game Thursday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was postponed because of bad weather.
Hayward, which started the season without 3 starters who had eligibility problems, has won 2 of its past 3 games with the roster at full strength. The Pioneers (18-12 last season) have qualified for the NCAA Division II West regional 4 years in a row.
Guard Ryant Diew, one of the players who was ineligible when the season began, was the team’s leading scorer last season with a 21.5-point average.
San Francisco State is led by guard Robert Thrower (18.2 ppg) and center Carlos Torres (15.4).
A Northridge sweep would enable the Matadors to match the school’s 7-1 start in the 1983-84 season. CSUN has reached triple digits in 4 of its victories. Derrick Gathers, a 6-3 junior swingman, leads the team with 17.6 scoring and 8.4 rebounding averages.
