Boys’ Roundup : La Quinta Loses Despite 39 Points From Campbell

Scott Campbell of La Quinta High School scored a game-high 39 points but the Aztecs lost to Corona del Sol, 100-82, Wednesday in the consolation semifinals of the Chandler, Ariz., tournament.

Campbell made 13 of 22 shots and 11 of 15 free throws for La Quinta, which dropped to 4-4. Officials called 52 fouls, and the teams combined to shoot 77 free throws. La Quinta made 24 of its 37 free throws. Corona del Sol (9-1) made 25 of 40 free throws.

In the Canyon tournament:

Newport Harbor 60, Villa Park 51--Chris Lee scored 19 points and Paig Parish added 10 for Newport Harbor in the championship quarterfinals. Chris Johnson led all scorers with 24 for Villa Park.

Newport Harbor plays Santa Ana tonight at 6 in one semifinal game. Villa Park plays Pomona at 2 p.m. in the consolation round.

Santa Ana 57, Pomona 39--Senior guard Mike Zamora scored 20 points as Santa Ana turned a close game into an easy victory. Santa Ana trailed, 21-19, at halftime but outscored Pomona, 19-11, in the third quarter and, 19-7, in the fourth quarter.

Lompoc Cabrillo 63, Canyon JV 55--Canyon’s Eric Oliver hit six of his team’s eight 3-point shots to score 27 points in a losing effort. The Canyon junior varsity (6-4) is participating in place of a British Columbia team that dropped out of the tournament. James Loggins led Cabrillo with 26 points.

Canyon JV drops to the consolation round to play Canyon’s varsity team at 4 p.m. The JV team defeated Valencia, 43-42, Tuesday in the first round.

Anaheim 58, Canyon 49--Jude Barbito scored 21 points and Danny Castro added 19 to lead Anaheim (5-4) in a quarterfinal game. Kevin Wilborn, who scored 12 points, was the only Canyon player to score in double figures. Canyon is 8-4.

Anaheim plays Lompoc Cabrillo in one semifinal tonight at 8.

In the consolation quarterfinals:

Southern California Christian 67, Hayward Tennyson 60--Kenny Cross scored 22 points and Ed Felten 18 for Southern California, which plays San Francisco Lowell at 10 a.m. in a consolation semifinal game.

San Francisco Lowell 58, Trabuco Hills 56--Akili Jones and Derrick Wong scored 20 points each for Lowell, which plays Southern California Christian in one consolation semifinal today at 10 a.m. Rick Swanwick scored 17 and Tim Manning 13 for Trabuco Hills.

La Mirada 52, Bolsa Grande 39--Brian Tiller scored 13 points and Richard Law 12 for La Mirada. Thai Nguyen and Chris Rosener had 12 each for Bolsa Grande.

La Mirada plays Esperanza at noon in one consolation semifinal.

Esperanza 68, Valencia 61--Walter Forcotto scored 24 points and Greg Pope 22 for Esperanza. Anthony Kilburg scored 12 and Richard Tibbie 10 for Valencia.

In the Katella tournament:

Servite 54, Bell 43--Steve Marusich scored 15 points to lead Servite (7-4) in the first round. Sal Serrano scored 13 points and Cesar Eballe added 10 for Bell, which drops to 4-4.

Western 82, Gahr 81--Four players scored in double figures to lead Western (8-2) in a first-round victory. Joe Romero had 21 points, Sam Sabbara 19, John Armenta 15 and Bryan Baber added 12. Raymond Johnson scored 20 points to lead Gahr (8-3).
