USIU Ends Losing Streak at 10 Games

Sonya Carter scored 30 points and U.S. International University’s women’s basketball team stopped a 10-game losing streak with an 82-81 victory over Southwest Texas State Wednesday at the La Jolla Jewish Community Center.

USIU (3-11) led, 37-30, at halftime and hung on to hand Southwest Texas State (6-3) its first road loss of the season in five games.

Dawn Crinklaw added 18 points for USIU and Vanessa Johnson had 14. Chris Ferrell led Southwest Texas State with 19 points.

William Jewel College’s Mary Patton made a 10-foot jump shot from the baseline with 14 seconds remaining to give the Cardinals (5-5) a 74-72 victory over Point Loma Nazarene (7-4). Patton had a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Point Loma’s Ann Duffy scored 22 points. Shandel Reddic had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Shannon Anderson added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Crusaders.

CROSS-COUNTRY

San Diego McDonald’s restaurants will host the 5th McClassic Jan. 14 at Mission Bay Park. This year’s event includes 10-kilometer and 1-mile runs for children under the age of 12. There will also be a 4-mile walk.

Tony Gwynn of the Padres will be the honorary race director. All proceeds from the race will go to Big Kids for Little Kids, a non-profit organization that supports San Diego area child abuse prevention charities.

SOCCER

The championships for the La Jolla Cup CIF soccer tournament are scheduled for Saturday at Allen Field in La Jolla. The finals were originally scheduled for Dec. 21, but were canceled by rain. Carlsbad will meet Crawford in the Limited Division championship game at 1 p.m. and San Diego will play University City in the Unlimited Division championship game at 2:30.
