Winter Sports : St. Francis Edges La Salle to Run Soccer Mark to 8-1

Martin Boskovich scored with 8 minutes to play, lifting St. Francis High to a 2-1 victory over La Salle in a boys’ nonconference soccer match Thursday at La Salle.

David Beall, the most valuable player of the 1988 L. A. Summer Games, scored first for St. Francis.

Knight goalie Alex Poli made 5 saves.

St. Francis is 8-1; La Salle is 7-2.

Burroughs 2, San Gabriel 1--Sean O’Connor’s corner-kick goal with 10 minutes to play gave the Indians (5-4 overall, 2-1 in league play) the margin of victory in the Foothill League match at Burroughs.

Jose Beltran opened the scoring midway through the second half with a 10-foot shot.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Notre Dame 3, L.A. Westlake 1--Goals by Lynn Hosek, Becca Berline and Shannon Tuttle led the Knights to the nonleague win.

WRESTLING

Harvard 61, Chaminade 9--John Lee set the pace in the host Saracens’ San Fernando Valley League opener by scoring a 23-9 win over Josh Ellis, the defending league champion at 132 pounds.

Chaminade’s lone win was posted by Justin Stark, who stopped Rick Ferrell. Three Eagles failed to make weight and another forfeited his match.

In the 175-pound class, Kevin Newman pinned Chaminade’s Greg Baumgartner in 3:39. Robert Rhodes, who finished second in the league last season, defeated Gary Purse, 6-1, in the 154-pound match.

Purse was second in the league at 145 pounds last season.

Harvard improved to 8-2 and 1-0 in league meets.
