Girls’ Basketball Roundup : McDaniel’s 3-Pointers Boost Brea

Junior guard Aimee McDaniel scored 28 points, including two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, to lead Brea-Olinda High School to a 59-51 victory over Valencia in the Orange League girls’ basketball opener for both teams at Brea.

Valencia had pulled to within 43-42 early in the fourth quarter, but McDaniel made back-to-back 3-pointers to put Brea ahead, 49-42.

Tami Blackburn added 12 for Brea (11-2). Nancy Amoroso scored 18 points for Valencia (8-7).

In another Orange League game:

Savanna 33, Western 31--Karena Lee made a 15-foot jumper with about a minute left to give Savanna 31-30 lead. Lisa Rios followed with a short jumper with about 20 seconds left to give Savanna a 33-30 lead.

Rios and Jackie Boxley has 12 rebounds each for Savanna, and Carrie Fredrick and Michelle Drew had a team-high 8 points each for Savanna. Vicki Evans had 10 points for Western.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 57, Rosary 36--Cori Martin had 26 points and 19 rebounds to lead host Mater Dei (11-5, 2-0). Kelly O’Brien scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds and 6 assists for Mater Dei.

In the Century League:

Canyon 70, Santa Ana Valley 57--Keri Erkenbrack scored 22 points and had 11 assists to lead host Canyon (11-4, 2-0). Sheri Rhynes also scored 22 for Canyon. Francesca Rumps scored 22 and Nilda Valdez 17 for Santa Ana Valley.

Foothill 52, Villa Park 26--Tanya Foxe scored 13 points and Stacy Hipsak added 10 to lead visiting Foothill (7-5, 2-0). Villa Park (4-8, 0-2) got as close as 18-12 in the second quarter, but Foothill ran away with the game in the second half.

In the Empire League:

Katella 55, El Dorado 38--Forward Joni Easterly scored 17 points to pace visiting Katella. Melissa Jantz led El Dorado (3-5, 0-2) with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Esperanza 69, Los Alamitos 41--Forward Karen dalla Rosa scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead host Esperanza (6-9, 1-1). Center Kim Kordik and guard Jennifer Harney each added 10 points for Esperanza. Allison Arradondo led Los Alamitos (8-7, 0-2) with 18 points.

Cypress 44, Loara 39--Center Erika Manning scored 16 points and collected 11 rebounds, and forward Stacie Kosaka had 15 points to lead visiting Cypress (12-5, 2-0). Cypress outscored Loara, 11-4, in the third quarter. Center Tracy Titus had 10 points for Loara (11-8, 1-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 42, Troy 25--Lynn Gilbert scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds and Sommer McLane had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Fullerton (8-5, 2-0). McLane is averaging 15 rebounds a game so far this season.

Sonora 41, Sunny Hills 26--Maggie Takei scored 10 points and Lorene Rudisel had 9 rebounds and 6 points for Sonora (3-9, 1-1), which won its first league game in 3 seasons.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 57, Orange 53--DeDe Sampson scored 20 points, Shelley Calhoun 15 and Marta Bickert 10 for host Trabuco Hills (8-5, 1-0). Nicole Champion scored 17 and Ginnie Hall 13 for Orange (7-6, 0-1).

Woodbridge 57, Costa Mesa 37--Leslie Rathbun scored 26 points to lead Woodbridge (10-5, 1-0) at home. Lisa Whren added 11 for Woodbridge.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 60, Newport Harbor 47--Dee Dee Anderson scored 13 points, 12 in the first quarter as host Tustin opened a 20-12 lead. Teresa Perkins had 14 for Tustin (9-7, 1-0). Jen Ryan scored 12 points and Ali Izumita 10 for Newport Harbor.

University 58, Corona del Mar 27--Forwards Denise Ganbara and Shelley Davis scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead University (12-3, 1-0) at Corona del Mar (0-1). Kelly Cohen had 13 points for Corona del Mar.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 52, Capistrano Valley 42--Mission Viejo led by only 2 after 3 quarters, but Tina Ranker scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the final quarter for host Mission Viejo. Ranker, a senior point guard, also had 10 assists.

Dana Hills 43, Irvine 33--Erin Schimeneck scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds to lead visiting Dana Hills (4-8, 1-1).
