High School Soccer : Birmingham Secures Win on Free Kick

Junior fullback Jorge Pineda scored on a free kick from 35 yards in the second half as Birmingham High defeated Van Nuys, 1-0, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ soccer match Wednesday at Birmingham.

Goalkeeper Andrew Sherman recorded his fifth shutout as the Braves improved to 6-1, 2-1 in conference play. Van Nuys is 3-4, 0-2.

Cleveland 3, El Camino Real 0--Todd Lunbeck, Juan Carlos Hernandez and Edwing Paz scored for Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.

Lunbeck scored 6 minutes into the game and Hernandez added a goal 30 minutes later to give the Cavaliers (3-3-1, 2-0-1) a 2-0 halftime lead. Paz scored on a direct kick in the second half.

Monroe 1, Poly 0--Jaime Leal scored off a pass from Alvaro Perez 30 minutes into the Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Monroe. Monroe improved to 6-0, 2-0 in conference play. Poly is 1-3 in conference play.

Granada Hills 2, Taft 1--Tony Wetzel and Nolan Ransdell each scored second-half goals for Granada Hills (4-1-1, 2-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Granada Hills.

Alex Monroe added a goal for Taft (2-1 in conference play) to prevent a shutout.

Canoga Park 3, Kennedy 3--Tony Mancuso scored for Canoga Park with 8 minutes to play to forge a tie in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy. Miguel Reyes scored 2 goals for Canoga Park (1-4-2, 0-2-1).

San Fernando 1, Chatsworth 1--Sergio Pizano gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 20-minute mark, but Chatsworth scored 15 minutes later in the Northwest Valley Conference match at San Fernando.

Reseda 2, North Hollywood 2--Reseda was unable to maintain a 2-0 halftime advantage in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at North Hollywood.

Alfonso Cabrera and Jesus Lopez scored first-half goals for Reseda (3-2-2, 0-2-1).

GIRLS

Royal 3, Thousand Oaks 1 (OT)--Tania Schraml, in her first game as a striker, scored 3 goals, including 2 in overtime, to lead the Highlanders in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.
