High School Basketball Roundup : Castle Park Goes Into Overtime to Defeat Bonita Vista, 71-62

Lamont Bowens scored 4 of his team-high 14 points and Gerardo Gomez made 6 of his 13 points in overtime as the Castle Park High School boys’ basketball team defeated Bonita Vista, 71-62, in a Metro Conference game at Castle Park.

Castle Park (3-11, 2-3) outscored Bonita Vista, 10-2, in overtime.

Castle Park led until Bonita Vista tied the score with 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Carnell Penn hit a jump shot for Castle Park with 1:10 left to tie the score, 60-60. Bonita Vista then ran the clock down to 12 seconds to set up a final play, but missed two shots to send the game into overtime.

Alan McNanee led Bonita Vista (3-10, 2-3) with 18 points.

In other Metro Conference games:

Southwest 71, Marian 55--Sean Swensen and Will Tate each scored 24 points for host Southwest. Swensen made 6 3-pointers. Adalberto Silva added 13 points for Southwest (12-5, 4-0). Marian is 1-8 and 1-2.

Coronado 51, Chula Vista 42--Jesse MacNeil scored 19 points and Derek Wastila had 11 for host Coronado. Richie Greaser scored 12 points for Chula Vista (6-12, 3-2). Coronado is 5-8 4-1.

Sweetwater 81, Hilltop 55--Host Sweetwater (15-2, 4-1) scored 27 first-quarter points and never looked back. Sweetwater’s Carlos Campbell had 16 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists; John Gilbert had 16 points, Cortez Rice had 14 and Shawn Holmes 13. Chris White had 14 points and Malcolm McCurty 10 for Hilltop (5-10, 1-2).

Mar Vista 67, Montgomery 44--Tim Page and Jim Gruber each scored 14 to pace visiting Mar Vista (2-12, 1-3), and Coit Valentine had 10. Montgomery is 0-11 and 0-5.

Palomar League

Fallbrook 48, San Dieguito 38--Fallbrook held San Dieguito to 9 of 42 shooting from the floor. Keith Elston scored 15 points to lead Fallbrook (7-8, 2-1). Brian Malewicz had 14 and Matt de La Pena 13 for San Dieguito (7-7, 1-1).

Poway 85, Vista 39--Second-ranked Poway made 30 of 67 shots from the field, 21 of 34 from the line and outrebounded Vista, 54-27, at Poway. Adam Jones led Poway (14-0, 3-0) with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Greg Sorrell had 13 points and Gabby Awbrey had 11. Vista, which made only 15 of 60 field goal attempts and 4 of 14 free throws, got 12 points from Herbie Weston. Vista is 4-11, 0-3.

Avocado League

El Camino 92, San Marcos 62--Dee Boyer had 18 points, 17 rebounds and 9 blocked shots for El Camino at San Marcos. Jeff Reeves added 17 points and Todd Swanson had 15 assists for El Camino (9-5, 2-1). Jay Kitti had 17 points for San Marcos (5-8, 1-2).

Escondido 61, San Pasqual 51--Brooks Barnhard scored 27 points to lead host Escondido (7-5, 2-1), and Kurt Vurpillat added 13. Four San Pasqual starters fouled out. Escondido made 22 of 33 free throws and San Pasqual (5-6, 2-1) made 10 of 21.

Oceanside 56, Rancho Buena Vista 50--Lee Strain scored 14 points, Greg Frazier had 13 and Kenya Hunt had 12 for host Oceanside. Todd Fellers had 17 points for Rancho Buena Vista (5-9, 1-2).

Ramona 57, Carlsbad 55--Visiting Ramona led, 18-5, after the first quarter and then withstood a second-half Carlsbad rally. Tony Newman scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds for Ramona (5-8, 2-1), and Nate Hollingsworth had 10 points. Carlsbad (3-9, 0-3) outscored Ramona in the second half, 35-24.

Nonleague

San Diego 54, Clairemont 40--Raynard Wells scored 20 points and Clark James had 16 points and 11 rebounds as San Diego won at Clairemont. Ray McDavid led Clairemont (8-9) with 21 points and 12 rebounds, but missed 8 free throws. Clairemont made just 12 of 25 free throws. San Diego, which led, 27-18, at halftime, is 9-2.
