Century League : Villa Park Defeats Foothill . . . Finally

Chris Johnson scored 19 points to lead Villa Park High School to a 58-55 victory over Foothill Wednesday in a Century League boys’ basketball game at Villa Park.

It was the Spartans’ first victory over Foothill in 5 seasons.

The Knights (9-8, 1-1) led most of the way, but Villa Park (9-7, 1-1) tied score, 56-56, with less than 4 minutes left. Chris Kirby, who finished with 16 points, hit a 3-point field goal with 3 minutes left to give the Spartans their first lead, 56-53.

Foothill led, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter and, 32-26, at halftime.

Mark Wilkinson scored 25 points for Foothill.

Santa Ana 63, El Modena 56--John Darrow scored a game-high 20 points and teammate Greg Gottlieb added 11, but it was not enough for visiting El Modena. Four players scored in double figures for Santa Ana (13-5, 1-1). Chauncey Woolridge led the way with 19. Mike Zamora scored 12, Oscar Wilson 11 and Richard Zamora had 10.

El Modena took a 10-2 lead early, but Santa Ana’s Woolridge scored 10 points in the second quarter as the Saints outscored El Modena, 18-14, and trailed by 1 (30-29) at the half. The Saints went ahead to stay in the third quarter. Woolridge scored 7 points and Mike Zamora hit 4 free throws down the stretch to hold off El Modena (12-5, 1-1).

Santa Ana Valley 79, Canyon 63--Brian Singleton had 35 points and 14 rebounds to lead Santa Ana Valley (10-5, 2-0). Court Bickmore scored 13 points and Sean Wilson had 10 for the Falcons. Kevin Wilborn scored 13 points for Canyon (10-7, 0-2).
