Girls’ Basketball : Trailing at Halftime, Poway Runs Past San Dieguito, 52-41

Christy Fortney scored 12 points to lead Poway to a 52-41 victory over San Dieguito in a Palomar League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Poway.

Poway (11-7, 3-1) trailed, 24-20, at halftime, but San Dieguito had trouble with Poway’s half-court zone press at the beginning of the second half. The Titans pulled away with a 16-4 run with help from Cynde Gruchala, who scored 6 points, and Allison Brady, who had 8 rebounds off the bench. Poway converted just 6 of 18 free throws. Julie Brown led San Dieguito with 10 pionts.

Vista 62, Torrey Pines 31--Chris Enger scored 21 points and Renee Richardson scored 14 for Vista. Vista led, 28-19, at halftime but broke open the game in the fourth quarter by outscoring Torrey Pines, 18-2.

Avocado League

Rancho Buena Vista 47, El Camino 24--Shawna Edge and Jenny Fellars scored 11 points each to lead Rancho Buena Vista (9-6, 2-2). Edge grabbed 14 rebounds and Stephanie Howells had 9 assists. Rancho led, 13-10, at halftime, and neither team scored until 5 minutes into the game. “We had enough shots,” Rancho Buena Vista Coach Bob Gibson said. “The ball just wouldn’t go in.”

San Marcos 60, Escondido 22--Senior Susie O’Brien outscored host Escondido herself with 27 points. Alisa Thomas and Niki Hoover added 10 points apiece for San Marcos (9-5, 4-0). Escondido had trouble with San Marcos’ man-to-man defense. O’Brien scored her game-high totals despite picking up three fouls in the first quarter and sitting down most of the second.

Metro Conference

Southwest 65, Montgomery 32--Senior forward Toni Beckham led all scorers with 30 points for Southwest (10-5, 5-1). Mesega Johnson added 20 for Southwest, which won easily despite early foul trouble. Southwest, missing two starters, led 17-7 after the first quarter and 28-15 at halftime.

Bonita Vista 47, Hilltop 33--Torril Purvis led host Bonita Vista with a game-high 19 points. Bonita Vista (12-4, 5-0) held Sara Floto, Hilltop’s 6-foot 1-inch center, to 7 points. Gloria Silva had 14 for Hilltop.

Coronado 51, Sweetwater 43--Julie Lochte led Coronado (8-6, 3-3) in both scoring (21) and rebounding (14). Negin Nagdi added 13 points for Coronado.
