The Preps : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Marina Overtakes Edison With Fourth-Quarter Run

Marina High School overcame a 7-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Edison, 49-41, in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Marina.

Edison led, 37-30, with 5 minutes 48 seconds remaining before Marina, led by junior guard Melisa Sortino, junior center Kristy Sparks and junior guard Christa Yorke, started a 19-4 run.

During the spurt, Sortino scored 8 of her 13 points, Sparks had 5 of her 11 and Yorke 4 of her 10. Sparks also had 8 rebounds.

Senior forward Krisden Tanabe scored 13 points and junior guard Debbie Fischer scored 11 for Edison (6-9 overall, 1-2 in league play). Marina is 15-3, 3-0.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 64, Westminster 11--Carolyn Fox scored 10 points, Kami Bigler, Amy Brand and Kathryn Kendall scored 8 each for visiting Fountain Valley (12-7, 2-1). Westminster (0-3 in league) didn’t score in the second quarter and trailed, 35-4, at the half.

Ocean View 58, Huntington Beach 25--Fabiola Nunez scored 11 points for visiting Ocean View (3-0 in league).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 71, St. Paul 45--Center Kelly O’Brien scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and guard Krisha Thompson added 19 points and 10 steals for visiting Mater Dei (12-5, 3-0). Forward Cori Martin added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Mater Dei. Forward Shannon Gray scored 20 points and guard Colleen Jewell had 18 for St. Paul (0-3).

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 63, Santa Ana 40--Junior forward Francesca Rumps scored a game-high 28 points for visiting Santa Ana Valley (8-5, 2-1). Junior Nilda Valdez added 19 for Santa Ana Valley.

Canyon 60, Villa Park 36--Senior forward Kerri Erkenbrack scored 20 points for visiting Canyon (12-4, 3-0). Junior center Evonne Caovertte scored 13 for Villa Park (4-9, 0-3).

Foothill 58, El Modena 17--Center Tanya Foxe scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds, and forward Sandi Rasmussen added 10 points to lead host Foothill (10-7, 3-0). Foothill had a 19-point lead at halftime and outscored El Modena, who dropped to 0-3 in league play, 16-0 in the third quarter.

In the Empire League:

Loara 46, Los Alamitos 34--Guard Melanie Sparks and forward Michelle Roland scored 12 points each and guard Kim Yoshioka added 10 points and 8 assists to lead Loara (12-7, 2-1) at Los Alamitos (1-2). Center Melinda Armstrong had 13 points for Los Alamitos.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 35, Troy 20--Lorene Rutisell scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds to lead host Sonora (4-9, 2-1). Sisters Monica and Thalia Polley each scored 8 for Sonora. Melissa Clevenger scored 8 for Troy.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 53, Orange Lutheran 48--Angela Garza scored 22 points and Cheri Culp added 14 to lead host Whittier Christian (5-0 in league). Pam Marty scored 14 points and Krista Whelply 12 for Orange Lutheran (6-5, 2-3).

Brethren 34, Capistrano Valley Christian 28--Carrie Shannon scored 15 for visiting Capistrano Valley Christian (3-8, 0-5 overall). Brethren is 1-4 in league.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 88, Magnolia 11--Forward Candy Anderson scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace host Valencia (9-7, 1-1). Center Kristen McDonald added 15 points, Fig Lo scored 14 and Nancy Amoroso 10 points for Valencia. Valencia opened a 49-8 halftime lead and held Magnolia (1-1) to 1 point in the third quarter.

Western 56, Anaheim 26--Vicki Evans scored 23 points and Jill Salazar scored 16 for visiting Western (10-6, 1-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 54, Laguna Beach 39--Orange trailed, 25-23, at the half but outscored visiting Laguna Beach, 12-6, in the third quarter. Nicole Champion scored 21 points and had 14 rebounds and Ginnie Hall had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Orange (8-6, 1-1), which switched to a full-court press in the second half. Liz Stall scored 23 for Laguna Beach.

Woodbridge 53, Laguna Hills 20--Senior forward Lisa Wehren had 19 points and 17 rebounds, and guard Leslie Rathbun contributed 12 points to pace Woodbridge (11-5, 2-0) at Laguna Hills (0-2).

In the Sea View League:

University 45, Saddleback 42--Sandy Johnson scored 4 points in the final 2 minutes for visiting University (13-3, 2-0). Johnson had 5 points and 9 rebounds. Noelle Sase had a game-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting for University.
