Wayne Cook of Newbury Park High and Greg Mattes of Moorpark College have made commitments to attend Division I schools on football scholarships.

Cook, a 6-foot, 4-inch All-Marmonte League quarterback, has verbally committed to UCLA. In 2 seasons at Newbury Park, Cook passed for 2,529 yards and 21 touchdowns.

“It’s like a dream,” Cook said Monday. “There’s going to be a lot of competition, but it’s worth it. I feel like if you think you can play, you might as well go play against the best.”

Cook also had drawn the attention of Nevada Las Vegas, Utah and Oregon State, but there was never a doubt once UCLA made contact. Asked when he made his decision to attend UCLA, Cook said, “Probably as soon as they started showing interest.”

Cook said that he would sign a national letter of intent Feb. 8, the start of the signing period for high school seniors.

Mattes, an all-conference offensive lineman for Moorpark, will attend UNLV. Mattes, who attended Newbury Park High, also was recruited by Colorado, Washington and Cal.
