Boys’ Roundup : Brea-Olinda Staves Off Western Rally, Wins at the Buzzer

Aaron Charlton scored at the buzzer to give Brea-Olinda High School a 68-66 victory over Western Wednesday in an Orange League basketball game at Brea.

The Wildcats (13-6, 2-1) led, 66-64, but Western’s Ed Serranno tied the score with 7 seconds left on a layup. After a time out, Charlton took the inbounds pass and drove through the middle for a layup to win the game.

The Pioneers (12-4, 1-2) trailed, 50-35, at the start of the third quarter but rallied behind the shooting of Brian Baber, who scored 12 of his 14 points in the final quarter.

Brea led, 27-24, at halftime and outscored Western, 23-11 in the third quarter. Matt Chamberlain scored 12 of his 17 points in the third quarter.

Keith Walker scored 30 points for the Wildcats.

Joe Romero each scored 14 points for Western.

In other Orange League games:

Savanna 61, Magnolia 39--Tim Tillman scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead host Savanna (17-1, 3-0). Jurry Jones led Magnolia (8-7, 2-1) with 10.

Valencia 47, Anaheim 46--Richard Tibbie scored 2 free throws with 38 seconds remaining to give Valencia a 47-44 lead. Mark Miller scored 14 for Valencia (4-8, 1-2). Danny Castro led Anaheim (7-9, 0-3) with 15 points.

In the Century League:

Foothill 53, Canyon 44--Mark Wilkinson scored 25 points and Corey Parker 13 for Foothill (10-9, 2-2). Canyon is 11-8, 1-3.

El Modena 79, Santa Ana Valley 63--Robbie Pietsch had 24 points and 26 rebounds to lead host El Modena (14-5, 3-1). Chuck Speen scored 31 points for Santa Ana Valley (14-6, 2-2).

Santa Ana 64, Villa Park 48--Oscar Wilson scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds to lead host Santa Ana (15-5, 3-1). Chris Johnson had 16 points and Chris Kirby had 11 to lead Villa Park (9-8, 1-3).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 69, Katella 56--Mark Johnson and Mike Flowers scored 20 points each to lead host Cypress (9-9, 4-0). Brian Yourstone and Tim Hall led Katella (6-10, 2-3) with 11 points each.

El Dorado 73, Loara 53--Matt Luke scored 8 points in the first quarter as El Dorado led, 20-12. Luke finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Mike Renaud and Mike Bradach added 15 each for El Dorado (14-4, 4-0). Tes Whitlock led Loara (2-13, 0-4) with 25.

Los Alamitos 62, Esperanza 59 (OT)--Los Alamitos (7-12, 2-2) trailed by 14 points with 5 minutes to play but battled back. Ted LaBouff, a 5-11 guard who came up from the junior varsity for the game, hit a 3-point shot with 5 seconds remaining to tie the score at 59. His 3 free throws accounted for the only points in overtime. LaBouff finished with 11 points and teammate Mike Wilson scored 25. Greg Pope led Esperanza (6-12, 0-4) with 15 points.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 54, Buena Park 38--Richard Wesley scored 15 points to lead host Troy (6-10, 1-3). Mike Abbott scored 10 points for the Warriors, who outscored the Coyotes (0-13, 0-4), 23-7, in the second quarter.

Fullerton 68, Sonora 63--Pete Bach scored 21 points to lead host Fullerton (11-5, 4-0). Matt Recktenwald had 21 points for Sonora (6-11, 1-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 78, Costa Mesa 60--Chris Sheff scored 27 points and Pat Nelson scored 23 to lead Laguna Hills (11-6, 3-0). Tim Nguyen led Costa Mesa (2-13, 0-3) with 22 points.

Trabuco Hills 74, Laguna Beach 49--Center Rick Swanwick scored 18 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and blocked 6 shots as the Mustangs (11-5, 3-0) remained in a first-place tie with Laguna Hills.

Woodbridge 74, Orange 59--Herman Cohen scored 18 points to lead host Woodbridge (4-10, 2-1). John Rodriguez scored 22 points for Orange (2-12, 0-3).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 62, Marina 56--Tom Weaver scored 18 points and Derrick Corcoran 16 to lead host Fountain Valley (16-2, 4-0). Thi Nguyen scored 16 points for Marina (8-11, 1-3).

Huntington Beach 82, Westminster 44--Scott Drake scored 17 points to lead Huntington Beach (8-9, 3-1) at Westminster. Jeff Long scored 14 points for the Oilers. Westminster is 3-13, 0-4.

Ocean View 55, Edison 51--Todd Norman scored 19 points to lead host Ocean View (12-6, 2-2). Bill Martineau scored 16 for Edison (9-11, 1-3).
