Shelley Davis and Denise Gandara each scored 18 points for University.

Newport Harbor trailed, 22-16, at halftime and scored the first 4 points in the third quarter to trail by 2 points.

But University went on a 12-2 run, including a technical foul on Newport Harbor Coach David Barela.

“We rebounded a lot better in the second half,” University Coach Doug Sorey said.

Davis, who scored 5 of her 18 points on free throws, grabbed 12 rebounds. Stacey Giem led Newport Harbor with 17 points before fouling out.

“We went to the trap and that stopped Giem from getting off her shot,” Sorey said.

University scored the first 12 points of the game and took a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
