The El Toro High School girls’ soccer team ended Mission Viejo’s national-record 84-game undefeated streak with a 2-1 South Coast League victory Thursday at El Toro.

El Toro (9-5-1 overall, 2-3 in league play) built a 2-0 halftime lead and held off a late rally to give Mission Viejo its first loss since Jan. 15, 1986.

Mission Viejo’s Annie Schroeder lined in a loose ball in front of El Toro goalie Paige Lauby with 8 minutes remaining in the game to make the score 2-1, but Lauby stopped two Mission Viejo scoring chances in the closing minutes.

Lauby went to her knees to save a sinking shot by Kelly Hampton with 4 minutes left and scooped up a loose ball with Mission Viejo’s Julie Foudy in front of her 3 minutes later to preserve the victory.

Mission Viejo’s most recent loss was to Laguna Hills, 1-0, also in a South Coast League game. Mission Viejo is 14-1-1, 3-1-1.

“At 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, all the kids came to my house and told me that we were going to win the contest,” said El Toro Coach Bob Chavez. “They wanted this one. They were really confident that they were going to win, and today, they were loose and relaxed going in.”

El Toro had lost to three teams ranked in the Southern Section 4-A poll--No. 3 Dana Hills, No. 4 Esperanza and No. 5 Capistrano Valley.

Said Jim Dutton, Mission Viejo coach: “You don’t ever like to lose, but give El Toro credit. They took us out of our game. They came out smoking and we just went out and watched them smoke. I thought we played well in the last 10 minutes of the game, but we were just flat before then.”

El Toro survived two Mission Viejo scoring chances early in the first half. The first came with 1 minute gone when Foudy evaded Leslie Steinart just outside the El Toro penalty area and kicked a low line-drive that sailed just wide.

Fourteen minutes later, after a Diablo free kick, Jennifer Delp picked up a ball in front of the El Toro net and also kicked the ball wide.

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead midway in the half when Shawn Viloria’s high angle shot inside the penalty area sailed over goalie Tamar deFries’ head into the net.

The Chargers got their second goal with less than a minute left in the half when Shannon de Avila took a pass inside the Mission Viejo penalty area and lined a short kick past deFries.

“After we got the first 2 goals in the first half, we went into a defensive game thinking that we could hold on,” Chavez said. “It worked for 30 minutes, but in the last 10 minutes, they came on strong and made it tough for us. But we just hung in there tough and just sucked it in when we had to.”
