SDSU Football Team Gets Oral Commitments from 5

San Diego State’s football team has received oral commitments from five players, including three from Banning High School in Wilmington and Southwest High School’s Will Tate.

The three Banning players are Carlson Lemoiti, a 6-foot 4-inch, 320-pound defensive lineman; Tommy Siufanua, a 6-4, 240-pound offensive guard who was recruited as a defensive end; and Eric Williams, a 5-9, 185-pound cornerback. All gave oral commitments to SDSU in the past week, said John Becker, Banning’s recruiting coordinator.

Tate, a first-team Times’ all-county wide receiver, caught 44 passes for 759 yards, both school records. Tate, 6-0, 160, also was recruited by New Mexico and Washington.

Also making an oral commitment to the Aztecs was Calvin Thomas, a 6-2, 245-pound defensive lineman from Compton Community College, said Will Thomas, Compton’s sports information director.

Southwest High School’s Hubert Phillips has orally committed to New Mexico. Phillips, 6-0, 185, was a second-team Times’ all-county running back. He rushed for 1,161 yards and 12 touchdowns in 162 carries.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Sonya Carter scored 25 points to lead U.S. International University to a 68-65 victory at Northern Arizona Monday night.

The Gulls (6-13) trailed, 36-31, at the half after leading, 21-13, midway through the first half. USIU rallied to tie the game, 50-50, and then took the lead for good, 57-56, on a jumper by Carter with 6 minutes remaining. Since losing 10 in a row, the Gulls have won four of their last six games. Northern Arizona is 4-10.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Utah, 6-3, in a nonconference match at SDSU Monday. Julie Tullberg, Dorey Brandt and Jessica Buss won singles matches as SDSU, ranked No. 20 in the nation, led, 3-2, going into the doubles. Tullberg and Brandt and Kristin Hill and Susan Hawke teamed to win doubles matches. SDSU is 1-0 and Utah is 0-1.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International is fourth and San Diego State is seventh after the first round of the USC Invitational at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. New Mexico State leads with a team total of 313 and San Jose State is 9 shots back at 322 and Arizona State is at 323. USIU shot 324 and SDSU, ranked No. 12 in the country, is at 332.

Pat Hurst of San Jose State is the individual leader at 2-over 74. Alison Shapcott of USIU is fourth at 77 and SDSU’s Karen Engberg is tied for fifth at 78.

GOLF

Entries are being accepted for the second Kellen Winslow Celebrity Invitational Golf tournament that will be held March 6 at Torrey Pines. Entries are $200 and must be received by Feb. 20.

The event benefits the Sickle Cell Anemia Information and Education Center in San Diego. Last year the tournament raised $12,000 with more than 60 golfers participating. For more information, call 565-0034.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Mt. Carmel High School will host the 4th Slam Dunk contest March 17 at the school’s gymnasium. The event is open to all high school students and those interested can contact the Mt. Carmel athletic department at 484-1180. Tickets for the event are $3 and can be purchased at the door.
