Girls’ Basketball : Jalewalia Leads Way for La Quinta

Amy Jalewalia scored 22 of her 32 points in the second half as La Quinta High overcame a sluggish first half to gain a 68-51 victory over host Rancho Alamitos in Garden Grove League play Wednesday night.

Jalewalia made 8 of 12 shots, including a 3-pointer, in the second half as La Quinta (15-3, 8-0) padded a 28-19 halftime lead. Jalewalia also had 21 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Heather Brannan added 16 points and 15 rebounds for La Quinta. Kristy Kalbhenn scored 24 points for Rancho Alamitos (14-2, 6-2).

“Amy tends to get down a little when she doesn’t score early,” La Quinta Coach Kevin Kiernan said. “We were a half a step behind in the first half, but give Rancho the credit. This teams are equal without Amy out there.”

In other Garden Grove League games:

Los Amigos 50, Garden Grove 33--Angela Fishbeck scored 17 points to lead Los Amigos (6-10, 4-4) at Garden Grove. Yuen Nguyen scored 11 points for Los Amigos.

Santiago 48, Pacifica 17--Robin Caires had 22 points and 7 assists to lead Santiago (7-8, 4-4) at Pacifica. Stef Cave scored 12 points for the Cavaliers.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 59, San Clemente 40--Shelley Zierhut scored 21 points and Holly Anderson 19 to lead host Capistrano Valley (16-5, 4-2).
