Harbour, Camarillo Rally Past Westlake

The Marmonte League basketball game played Friday night at Camarillo High developed into something your average psychiatrist would have loved to analyze.

Westlake High has its psycho “D” defense, but Camarillo showed it had some psycho “D and O”--as in defense and offense.

Camarillo forced the Warriors into 16 turnovers and David Harbour scored 21 points to lead the Scorpions to a 70-53 league victory.

Westlake (12-8, 5-3 in league play) had the Scorpions psyched out in the first quarter as the Warriors shot 50% from the field and opened an 18-8 lead.

Camarillo went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and cut the Warrior lead to 18-15. It also seemed to quiet the Warriors and give the Scorpions hope.

While Westlake could manage to make only 3 of 11 field-goal tries in the quarter, a 3-point basket by guard Rick Schnell with 21 seconds left gave Camarillo (14-5, 6-2) its first lead. A Harbour basket just before the buzzer expanded the margin to 32-29 at intermission.

Camarillo came out motivated in the third quarter as the Scorpions took it to the Warriors offensively and defensively and outscored them, 17-4, while forcing 8 Westlake turnovers and allowing only 2 baskets from the field.

Westlake resorted to fouling the Scorpions to try to slow their offense in the final quarter, but it was to no avail. Camarillo converted 12 of 18 free throws to frustrate the Warriors’ hopes.

The Scorpion defense held Kurt Schwan, Westlake’s leading scorer who had been averaging 22 points a game, to just 15. But Schwan did his part on the boards, grabbing a game-high 15.

Frank Dews added 16 points and Scott Foster had 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Scorpions. The Warriors converted just 22 of 56 shots from the field.
