College Basketball : UC Riverside Women Shoot Down CS Northridge for First CCAA Win

Patti Held scored a season-high 35 points and made 11 shots in a row to lead UC Riverside to a 72-68 upset of Cal State Northridge in a women’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball game Saturday at Northridge.

Held embarked on her hot streak in the second half as Riverside staved off a last-minute rally by Northridge to record its first CCAA victory.

Northridge, playing without leading scorer and rebounder Chris Cavalin, fell to 15-6 overall, 3-3 in conference play. The Lady Matadors made only 34.3% of their field-goal attempts.

In other women’s games:

Valley 79, Ventura 66--Tisa Rush scored 15 of her career-high 23 points in the second half and Christine Rumfola added 12 points to lift the Lady Monarchs to their seventh consecutive victory and a share of first place in the Western State Conference.

Cal Lutheran 72, Southern California College 62--Forward Heidi Griffith scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as the Regals overcame a 10-point halftime deficit in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Southern California College.

Moorpark 78, Glendale 56--Kristie Sterbens scored 17 points and Kerrie Marshall added 14 for the Lady Raiders in a WSC game at Moorpark.

MEN

Occidental 76, Pomona-Pitzer 73--Guard Ethan Caldwell made 2 free throws with 15 seconds to play to clinch the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory for visiting Occidental.

Southern California College 91, Cal Lutheran 88 (OT)--Steve deLaveaga scored a game-high 34 points--extending his streak of scoring in double figures to 76 consecutive games--for Cal Lutheran in a GSAC game at Southern California College.

Santa Barbara 89, Canyons 82--Dylan Nash and Avery Risin combined for second-half 34 points to topple Canyons in a WSC game.
