Golden State Athletic Conference Basketball Roundup : SCC Edges Cal Lutheran in Overtime

Terry Scruggs scored 25 points to lead Southern California College to a 91-88 overtime victory over California Lutheran at SCC Saturday night to remain unbeaten in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

SCC (20-2 and 8-0 in conference) took a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes and led by as many as 13 points in the first half. But Cal Lutheran’s Steve de Laveaga, who led all scorers with 34 points and scored in double digits for his 76th consecutive game, helped close the gap to 38-31 at halftime.

“When we got up early, (we) thought it was another ho, hum victory,” SCC Coach Bill Reynolds said. “But (de Laveaga) was doing anything he wanted. He could have had triple digits tonight.”

SCC maintained a 13-point lead for most of the of the second half before David Rowlands hit a three-point basket and de Laveaga followed with two more points. Cal Lutheran’s de Laveaga scored 19 points in the final six minutes to bring the Kingsmen within a basket, 78-76.

“In those last minutes we didn’t create any offense or defense,” Reynolds said. “Everybody just stood there.”

With the score tied with two seconds left in regulation, SCC’s Todd Dixon went inside for a layup, which was blocked by de Laveaga, sending the game into overtime.

SCC opened a quick lead in the overtime period and finally put the game away with two free throws from Kyle Lundy.

Along with Scruggs’ 25 points, SCC received 23 points from Lundy and 17 from Dixon. Jeff Bickmore added 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots for SCC.
