High School Roundup : Hart Tops Burroughs, Claims 1st Girls’ Title

Three starters scored in double figures as the Hart High girls’ basketball team clinched its first title in school history with a 69-35 win over Burroughs in a Foothill League game Tuesday at Burroughs.

Senior center Nicole Anthony (16 points), forward Sara Wilson (14 points) and guard Kim Posey (11 points) helped Hart--ranked No. 5 in the Southern Section 5-A Division--improve to 20-2 and 9-0 in league play. Nikki Brodowy added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Indians. Hart is three games in front of second-place Burroughs (15-6, 6-3) with one regular-season game remaining.

Wendy Bruse scored a team-high 14 points for Burroughs.

In other girls’ games:

Thousand Oaks 53, Westlake 36--Shani Smyth and Sue Kama each scored 15 points as the Lancers clinched at least a tie for the Marmonte League title at Thousand Oaks. The Lancers (21-4, 9-2) can win the championship outright Friday against Royal.

L.A. Baptist 52, Maranatha 41--L. A. Baptist (15-7, 6-3) moved a step closer to its first girls’ basketball title by forging a first-place tie with Maranatha (6-3 in league play) with one regular-season game remaining.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 73, San Gabriel 55--Kahyeed Murray and Paul Tapp each scored 15 points as the Bulldogs won their third consecutive game in the Foothill League game at Burbank.

Tapp scored 11 points in the third quarter when Burbank (5-15, 4-5) extended its one-point halftime lead to 57-43. Edmundo Zepeda added 13 points for the Bulldogs.

Faith Baptist 81, Buckley 53--David Hairston scored 14 points and Jason Henderson came off the bench to score 18 as Faith Baptist kepts its title hopes alive in Delphic League play.

Palmdale 54, Canyon 51--Canyon’s Jermaine Nixon had 19 points and 13 rebounds and teammate Jamil Austin had nine points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough in a Golden League game.

Montclair Prep 68, Western Christian 61--Behind 13 points and eight rebounds by J. T. Billingslea, the Mounties stayed alive in a race for first in the Alpha League.

Jason Gerber added seven points and 17 rebounds for Montclair Prep (16-9, 6-3), which could win a share of the league title by defeating Village Christian on Thursday.

St. Genevieve 91, Harvard 77--Center Ron Nielsen scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Valiants in a San Fernando Valley League game.

St. Genevieve (12-9, 5-4) scored 31 points in the second quarter and clinched a playoff berth.

Chaminade 93, LaSalle 75--Pete Miller scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in second quarter as the Eagles registered their highest point total of the season in the San Fernando Valley League game at LaSalle. Chris Bruckner added 24 points and 10 rebounds and Colin Havert had 14 points and 12 assists for Chaminade (9-10, 3-6).

Village Christian 88, Marshall Fundamental 68--Mike Curl scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Crusaders in the Alpha League game. Ben Evans added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Village Christian (10-10, 7-2).

Santa Clara 80, Calabasas 47--Sophomore center Greg Waugh had a team-high 11 points and 6 rebounds, but the Coyotes (8-12, 3-6) were overmatched in the Frontier League game.

Nordhoff 62, Agoura 53--John Thoe scored 14 points for Agoura (8-19, 6-3) in the Frontier League game. Sean Martin added 11 and Jeff Ingalls had 10 points.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 2, Crespi 1--St. Francis rolled to its 15th consecutive victory and clinched its first league title in eight seasons of competition with the Del Rey League win.

Goalkeeper Martin Boskovich broke a 1-1 tie by scoring on a penalty kick with two minutes to play. Fullback Mike Rendon also scored for St. Francis (15-1, 6-0).

Agoura 7, Santa Ynez 0--Matt Freedman scored three goals as the Southern Section’s top-ranked Division 1-A team rolled to its 17th consecutive win in the Frontier League match at Agoura.

Calabasas 4, Nordhoff 0--Calabasas clinched third place in the Frontier League and a berth in the playoffs behind a pair of first-half goals by fullback Jon Guillebeaux.

Simi Valley 4, Channel Islands 0--The Pioneers clinched at least a tie for the Marmonte League title behind James Albin’s three goals at Simi Valley (21-3-1, 9-1-1).

L.A. Baptist 6, Maranatha 0--Ron Simpson had two goals and an assist and Mark Marshall scored two goals for the Knights in the Alpha League match at Maranatha.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Agoura 7, Santa Ynez 0--Vanessa Martin scored twice and Julie Tingle had three assists in the Frontier League match at Santa Ynez as the Chargers finished the regular season 22-0, 10-0 in league.
