PREP BASKETBALL : Girls’ Roundup : Mater Dei Tops Bishop Montgomery, Wins 7th League Title in Row

Mater Dei High School held Bishop Montgomery to four points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a 52-38 victory that clinched the Monarchs’ seventh consecutive Angelus League girls’ basketball title Tuesday at Bishop Montgomery.

Mater Dei led, 19-6, after the first quarter, but Bishop Montgomery came back and trailed, 36-34, going into the fourth period.

Kelly O’Brien had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Cori Martin scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds for Mater Dei (20-5 overall, 9-0 in league play). Mary McCarthy had 12 points for Mater Dei.

In the Century League:

Canyon 70, Foothill 68 (2 OT)--Dee Moore’s layup with 3 seconds left gave Canyon the victory and clinched the league championship. Canyon is 18-5, 9-0. Foothill is 14-9, 7-2. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Foothill’s Kristy Walker sent the game into overtime tied, 58-58. Christa Ramirez of Canyon made a three-pointer with a second left to send the game into a second overtime tied at 64-64. Canyon’s Keri Erkenbrack had 15 points. Tanya Foxe had 25 points to lead Foothill.

Santa Ana Valley 58, El Modena 39--Francesca Rumps scored 25 points for Santa Ana Valley (12-7, 6-3) at home.

Villa Park 58, Santa Ana 43--Stacy Shimoda scored 23 points and had eight assists to lead Villa Park (7-12, 3-6). Gracie Lopez scored 20 points for Santa Ana.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 47, Sonora 31--Junior center Lynn Gilbert scored 11 points and had 17 rebounds to lead Fullerton (12-6, 7-2) at home. Jenny Comstock added 11 points and Benna Kennedy had 10 for Fullerton.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 44, Orange Lutheran 35--Carrie Shannon scored 15 points for host Capistrano Valley Christian (7-13, 3-10). Pam Marty scored 13 for Orange Lutheran (11-8, 7-6).

In the Orange League:

Savanna 43, Valencia 40--Jackie Boxley made both ends of a one-and-one with 18 seconds to give Savanna a 43-40 lead. Boxley finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds and teammate Lisa Rios had 12 points and 8 rebounds for Savanna (16-7, 6-3). Candy Anderson had 13 for Valencia (15-9, 6-3).

Brea-Olinda 95, Anaheim 14--Brea-Olinda (22-2, 9-0) clinched its seventh straight league championship at Anaheim. Tammy Blackburn paced the win with 18 points, seven assists and six steals.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Woodbridge 52, Laguna Beach 43--Woodbridge (19-5, 9-0) secured its sixth consecutive league championship at Laguna Beach. Leslie Rathbun’s 24 points and seven steals led Woodbridge. Liz Stal had 22 points and 17 rebounds for Laguna Beach.

Orange 50, Costa Mesa 35--Ginnie Hall scored 17 points to lead host Orange (13-8, 6-3). In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 60, San Clemente 53--Mission Viejo (21-3, 9-0) clinched its second consecutive league championship at San Clemente. Derrie Nauta led Mission Viejo with 19 points. Kristen Okura and Jennifer Rohrig added 12 points each, while Shannon Morgon contributed 11 points and eight steals.

El Toro 63, Dana Hills 30--Kristen Bevis had 28 points and 11 steals to help El Toro clinch second place. Karie Yoshioka added 10 points and eight assists for El Toro (16-9, 7-2).

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 58, Edison 54--Krisden Tanabe scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds to lead host Ocean View (23-3, 8-1), which clinched at least a share of the league title. Jenny Sullivan had 16 points, Tracy Wolfe 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Edison (12-10, 5-4).

Huntington Beach 54, Westminster 27--Jenny Ambrose had 17 points and 21 rebounds for host Huntington Beach (4-16, 2-7).

Fountain Valley 56, Marina 45--Stacey Hisaka scored 20 points and Kami Bigler added 15 for visiting Fountain Valley. Melisa Fortino led Marina (17-7, 5-4) with 15 points.
