Women’s College Basketball Roundup : Fullerton Wins Fifth Consecutive Game

Junior forward Kathy Werth had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 75-56 victory over San Jose State Thursday in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game at San Jose State.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for Fullerton (17-4 overall, 9-3 in Big West Conference play). Fullerton had defeated San Jose State, 78-51, in the first meeting this season.

Felicia Benson added 14 points and five assists and Gina Miller had eight points for Fullerton, which led at the half, 43-22. Miller fouled out late in the game. Sheryl Jones led Fullerton with four assists.

Lora Alexander scored 22 points for San Jose State (3-17, 0-11).

In another Big West Conference women’s game:

UC Irvine 67, Pacific 57--Senior center Natasha Parks scored 23 points, all in the second half, to lead host UC Irvine (6-15, 2-10). Parks missed all three shots she took in the first half but was nine for nine in the second. Parks also had a team-high nine rebounds; she has led Irvine in rebounding in every game this season. Jenny Lee had 16 points, and Shurrell Johnson had 10 points for Irvine.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Cal Poly Pomona 92, Chapman 75--Niki Bracken scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for host Cal Poly Pomona (19-4, 8-0).

Pomona, ranked second in the NCAA Division II national poll, broke out of a sluggish start early in the first half with a 23-6 run that put it ahead, 40-22, with 3:57 remaining in the first half.

Bracken scored 16 of her 24 points in the first half. Susan Luckinbill added 19, and former Brea-Olinda High School star Carrie Egan scored 16.

Chapman (10-11, 5-4) was led by Kim Rieff with 17 points and Jennifer Uecke with 16.
