Community College Roundup : Golden West Holds On for 5-4 Baseball Victory

Dave Turner turned in a strong pitching performance in relief Friday as Golden West College defeated De Anza, 5-4, in the second round of the Cypress baseball tournament at Golden West.

The Rustlers (4-0) play Cypress in the championship game at Cypress at 2 p.m.

Turner entered the game in the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out and preserved a 4-3 lead.

Turner (1-0) went the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing only an unearned run, for the victory. He struck out two and did not walk anyone.

In the other second-round game:

Cypress 13, Merced 4--Cypress (4-2) scored 10 runs in the third inning. Jason Friedman had a two-run double, Paul Boucher had a two-run single and Steve Gill capped the third inning with a three-run home run.

In the Arizona Mesa tournament:

Arizona Glendale 3, Fullerton 1--Tim Dodd threw an eight-hitter, striking out five and walking three, in a second-round game at Fitch Park.

In the Rancho Santiago softball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 5, Cerritos 1--Lolly Figueroa had two hits and two RBIs for host Rancho Santiago in the first round. Rancho Santiago scored three runs in the sixth to break at 1-1 tie.

Fullerton 2, Cypress 1--Fullerton scored two runs with the help of two Cypress errors in the bottom of the seventh.

In nonconference community college tennis:

Saddleback 6, Santa Barbara 3--Ed Peregrino defeated Lance Kronberg, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, in singles play to lead Saddleback (1-0) at Santa Barbara.
